Twin Cam RT Clutch Master Cylinder Problem

My low mileage 1200RT has developed a rather heavy Clutch action. I have disassembled the Master Cylinder to check the seals and they do look to be fine. As a start I intend to change the Fluid which is yellow in colour for the newer spec Hyspin V10. When re-building the Master Cylinder there is a thin plain washer which goes into the Cylinder bore after the Spring and piston. It looks like this washer is supposed to hold the Spring / Piston assembly in place within the Cylinder. I'm not happy with the way this washer locates in a groove in the Cylinder bore. I seems very haphazard. Does anyone have experience of this assembly.
