The DVSA are going to reduce the minimum engine size for training and testing for an A2 license from 395 to 249cc. This makes eminent sense as there are a lot of bikes in the 250-300cc market. At the moment it does not make financial sense for training schools to purchase different bikes for A2 so we fit a restrictor module in our A license bikes (we use Suzuki Gladius and the swapping of the ECU takes 2 minutes). The problem is that an A2 student is still trying to cope with a heavy more powerful bike and since Covid there has been an increase in people interested in getting on two wheels solely for commuting to avoid public transport.

We have found that many just do a CBT as they are concerned about taking that step up to a full license on a heavier more powerful bike and this does not encourage them to go on to further training, hence they become perpetual learners on 125s. This change will hopefully encourage them to go on to full licenses. Yes, the ATBs will need to invest in bikes in the 250-300cc range but we find that the most we would need are two and maybe with lowered suspension for those short in the leg and stature.

All in all a good move from the DVSA.
