I am trying to open a .gpx file (it's a route from Calais to Pont-a-Mousson) in Google Earth Pro from my hard drive. I click file/open then select the file, GE opens a message for me to confirm and then opens a window for me to click Create KML Tracks which I do. It says the file is open and I am expecting to see the route superimposed on GE but apart from a very small bit of pink track at the start and at the end there is nothing else.

Does anybody have any insight into this?

Ooohh, 9000th post, only took me nearly 20 years.;)

What happens to those two bits of pink if you zoom in?

Since Garmin dropped the Google Earth visualisation option, I don’t use Google Earth Pro on my Mac but are these any good to you, Mike?

I found an old file on my Garmin account from 2010, which my iPad opened up in Google Earth. So, it must work, I guess:

Not Google Earth, but if you are running Windows 10 there is a free application called GPX Player in the Microsoft Store, it's simple and intuitive, supports import / export and you can see stats like elevation, replay routes, change viewing angles etc.

Fantastic little free tool if you are Win 10.

Thanks for that. I use a Mac but can access Win 10 with Parallels.

I'll give it a go.

Thanks all for the help. I wasn't aware of the free GPX player on Win10. Lots of things to try this afternoon, will report back.

Ok, update.

I thought i'd try a different .gpx route just in case there is a problem with the original one I was using.

So here is the route in Portugal as it looks in Mapsource - 1st pic

I then tried the gpx2kml.com conversion website - 2nd pic

i then use the File/Open facility in Google Earth - 3rd pic

There is some progress as you can see the route is now being displayed in pics 2 and 3 but they are clearly not following the roads as per the Mapsource image

Any other suggestions?.

The good news is that it has at least picked up your start, end and intermediate points.

My suggestion would be to display the route in MyMaps and, from within MyMap, change the map layer to ‘Satelite’. That’s a work around, not a solution to the Google problem.

Try converting the route to a track so it does’t recalculate

Sorry - that’s not clear.

Use basecamp/mapsource to convert your route to a track. Export the track (or even the track and the route) as a gpx, then convert it to kml, then import that into google earth. I’ve found that google maps or google earth recalculate a route.

I have tried the Microsoft GPX Player free download on Win10, opening a GPX file with a route in it - however it does not show the route and wont play the route - any tips?

Is this advice of any help, Mike? It’s reasonably current, so I guess it still works.

I see that CalTopo (whatever it is) has its own website and help page, too:

This video is quite a good ‘How to” explanation:
