701 or ktm 950 se

They’re as good on road as any adventure bike.
I used mine 90% on the road, as that was always the plan when I bought it.
Toured a couple of times on big trips and it was ace.
All day comfy with the Renazco seat and tank range of 280 ish to reserve was handy.

Looked like this when I sold it :

Only sold it after a decade of ownership as knee problems made it a bit too tall for mine and didn’t really want to mess around lowering it.
Mike will love it.

Btw, I bet nobody can guess what it cost me new in 2008 ?

It pretty much looks the same now Martin,
But it’s currently got smaller wheels fitted.
I do know what you paid for it new in 08 as I went back through the forum .
I’ll be probably paying nearly double that,,,lol
I’ve set my heart on it,
As said previously,if I can’t get on with it I can sell it and get a 701 no prob.
I’ll never get the chance to own one as nice as this again.

I bought it when KTM knocked £2000 off the price of the SE and also the 950 SuperMoto.

So, obviously with no VAT over here it cost me £ 5300 !!!
Should have bought 6 and kept them crated up !!! :)

I’ll pop over on the Husky when I get it and you can have a good ride on it.......as long as I can take out the 950 natch. :)

Buy the SE, rag the fuck out of it to scratch that itch then flog it and buy a 701.

I thought the KTM seat height would be a problem, but it’s so slim and light that it wasn’t.

Deal done.:D
It’s currently got 19” front,17” rear fitted.
And a low seat,
And the yokes dropped by 25mm
And the preload wound off,
Lol
I’ve got some part worn tkc80’s off a 1200 Gs I’ll stick on it and see how I go.
I’ll bet diamonds once I get used to it I’ll start to wind the front and rear back up.
I’m a riding god so no need to touch the floor:blast:confused::doris

I tried having my shock lowered but hated it as it lost all the presence an SE has, I'm 6ft and love the full height

Here in short arse mode

And back up to 'normal' height with Safari tank

You bastards !!!
This bike had a seat height of 950mm from memory which I thought was fitting .
Now the oompah loompah has got hold of it , it’s being castrated !!!

Next you’ll be stripping it down and doing a ground up rebuild !!! :)))

Did Magnon ever get the header re-plated as that was going a bit ?

I may well be lowering it a tad but rest assured it’s going to get used for the purpose it was built.
Like the HP2 these two bikes will never be built again.
So the modern equivalent may well have more power but they are also 25% heavier as well.
With loads of intrusive and unnecessary electronics.
The big manufacturers can’t even build a 500cc adv bike under 200kg it would seem.
Every single adv bike released in the last few years IMHO has been totally underwhelming.
(701/690 excluded).
I’m with TIM and ANDRES,
Bikes need to leave you with shaking hands and a cold sweat first time out.:okay

Some nice rade goodies

I considered briefly but having had rally and wannabe rally bikes I want to keep mine naked.
I can cover 600 miles comfortably in a day then ride it on all but the very difficult trails.

I've ridden a lot of great bikes but none of them quite hit the spot like this one does :)

I’d be looking for recommendations for suspension chaps,
Specifically someone that knows the big bikes,950/hp2
My local guys are great but are MX oriented,
So tend to favour race setups,
Also would like more info on the 990adv shock Tim if you have it.

Worked on some of the big Dakar bikes, knows the WP kit pretty well.

It needs to be a 990R adv shock.
There's 2 types, one with a longer reservoir (7 rings) and the shorter one with 5 rings which is what will for the SE. Spring rate needs to be dropped to either 130 or 140. No revalve needed.
However since every one else found out about this they've become in short supply but it will transform the handling!!
Standard fork springs are stiffer than the adv but perfect although I had a slight revalve.

EDIT.
You may be able to use a normal 990 adv shock which is lower but it also needs to have the shorter reservoir to clear the subframe.....although some folk had modified the sub frame to get clearance but it's a bit of a codge.

Talking of sub frames, I reinforced mine.
