Best tarmac tyre for 1200/1250?

I'm contemplating a set of Dunlop's new Mutants for my XR though I think they have the GS sizes covered too. Early user reports seem positive for both cold and spring temperature road use if a little limited on info. Wonder if its a return to form for Dunlop ? they seem to have moments of brilliance followed by years of average capability tyres as a general view and my own experiences albeit limited to D207 plain - ok, D207GP-- lovely , Roadsport 2 -ok , OEM Africa Twin Dunlop's -too many butt puckering front end moments leant over than I care for. Only thing holding me back is my XRs OEM T31s are barely worn, work ok if a little loose on very cold/damp tarmac and I'm getting tight in my old age.

Chatted with Stick and it’s confirmed I’m going with the TA3’s

Thanks to everyone for your views, recommendations and advice....

Now who is doing the best deals I wonder?:thumb

Batman if you want to do a trackday on the GS I would put the CRA3 on...The currently "sportiest" tire in GS sizes. But on the road the PST2 and CTA3 are just as good but last longer ! The only difference between the 2 that the Pirelli is probably a kunthair quicker steering while the Conto being more stable @ speeds above 110 mph and longer lasting...As for the new Roadtec 01SE that is really good I hear don't worry as it is not available in GS sizes...:D
Also I hear the very good trackday/road/rain Metzeler M9RR should become available in GS sizes this year :thumb2
But it is probably wasted on the GS as if you want to get really fast you will warp your small 305 mm front rotor$$$ and grind your peg$$$ if you really want to exploit the advantages this tire would give over the ones mentioned above !
The PR5 is also good in the rain which can be an important factor on your island but does not last as long as the Pirelli or Conti...

I find the best tyres are the ones that give me confidence while riding. The best for me are the Conti Trail attack. Someone once called a brand death wings when I had a Varadero, I lost confidence overnight with them and have never gone back to them.

I had death wings on my second Varadero and on my Crosstourer, they were horrendous in the wet and got binned quickly

Bridgestone is junk....MOTORRAD just printed the 2021 touring tire test...The new Bridgestone T32 had not only the highest wear but where also the slowest on the wet track.Fastest PR5GT with 1 min 22 seconds flat ,second was Metzeler R01SE 1min 22,3 which is basically the same but the Bridgestone needed 1 min 29 seconds.7 seconds a lap more which is Huge.Best tires where Metzeler because they had the least tire wear, very good in the dry and as good as the PR5 in the rain, then the PR5 and followed by the RA3 which did a 1 min 26,4 in the rain but felt "sporty" as always in the dry as also very long lasting. The Roadsmart 3 were almost as bad as the Bridgestone in the rain...
Seems like the R01SE is the road tire to go for...but not for the GS because no GS sizes...yet.

Batman---Good choice.Stick obviously knows what he is talking about. The CTA3 is probably the best GS tire right now :thumb2 Like I said the PST2 is just as good but does not last as long...But also a good tire as it was/is the OEM tire for the 1290ADV-S and MS V4...KTM switches to Mitas for 2021 obviously for cost reason$$$...And BMW puts the Bridgestone/Panakee3 junk on it...
German company should run german tires, especially when they are as good as the TA3...Deutsche Technik :thumb

Giles , looks like a MotoGP rain tire...:thumb Had the 01 without the SE on my 1200 ADVenture and can't say nothing bad about them except that the front was kind of loud around town kind of a mountain bike tire and that the CTA3 and PST2 felt just as good and lasted as long...The CTA3 even longer ! The CRA3 is probably the direct competitor to the MR01SE...But I definitely would try it on the GS if it was available on the search for the best tire...A tire that lasts 12K miles,is quick steering and stable @ high speeds...Not available yet ;) Especially with the bikes getting torquier which eats mileage !

Plus 1 for Metzeler Road Tech, have them on my 2016 Adventure, absolutely brilliant in all conditions

Thank god ,the original fitment 01s were fuckin awful if you braked hard and wanted to ride in a spirted and fast way ... still would take a free set to get me to try them again.
Nice looking bike Giles.

Thanks boxerlust, the TA3’s have yours and Stick’s endorsement! That’s got to be good!

As soon as I receive my refund from m&p for the Trailriders....I’ll be placing my order.

I don’t get very excited about very much these days, but I am excited about getting my new TA3’s

Oh I’m also quite excited about my newly finished lightweight Bantam Trials bike, I’ve been two years building it and it’s gonna be a good ‘un. Just come in now from riding it around on my decking.

I’ve been posting stuff on the trials site but I doubt anyone from here goes on those pages.

Thanks guys, much appreciated :thumb2

Continental Trail Attack 3....superb in dry & wet conditions and last quite well; on my 2nd set on the KTM 1290 SA-T :D

I have the TA3 on my Crosstourer (don't say a feckin word Boxerthrust) and I am really enjoying them.
I would be interested to try the new Tourance Next II but I think it will be a while because the TA3 are wearing so well.

S20 5G sent this......
