Andres,is it here yet?

Be interested to see it in a few weeks time once it has evolved from its Chrysalis, has it’s wings on and is ready to fly like a precious butterfly. :D

Seriously. I do like them and health to enjoy! :thumb2

Getting there :)

Important shit first:

Removal of big ugly dangly down mudguard thing, drill what's left and fit small illegal number plate ~ check.

Remove nearly 3kg of Euro5 silencer and fit anti-socially loud, light as a feather Ti silencer ~ check.

Now drilling holes in body work for the rack.......ever so slightly scary.............

Which rack did you go for ?

Drilling holes for my Nomad kit was a piece of piss because the areas that need drilling are already marked on the underneath of the plastics.
I’m pretty sure that most racks will use the same fitting points that are already in place on the rear frame.

You’re right about the holes and yeah, dead straight forward.....just a bit nerve racking on a 10 mile old bike in case you fuck it up :D

How is it going with the farkling?

The only advice I can give is tighty loosy, measure once drill twice :D

Having spent the weekend getting her how I want her she went out for her first proper run today, 100 miles around Notts finest back roads..........

Suspension is currently set dead soft just to allow it to work hard and break in. It actually feels nice like that so I may well leave be and just firm it up for when I use the SM wheels. Interestingly I checked the dynamic & static sag this morning and it was within 0.5mm of it's ideal setting so the shock/forks would seem set up for my weight, perfect :)

On the road that short stroke engine just wants to spin up so easily, it's frustrating running her in, but she'll still get up to 80mph without stressing the engine. It's possibly the smoothest big single I've ever ridden but it's still a single so there are some vibes, high frequency but nothing that bothers you.

Having read so much about low speed fuelling on these bikes and the lengths some people go to to deal with it I've fully expected to have to fit a Power Commander at some stage, especially as mine is the first Euro5 incarnation.......... well, that's out the window as the low down fuelling is perfect. I tried my best to purposefully upset it but couldn't, it really is a peach, no snatchiness, no hunting, just smooth and progressive :) 1st gear feels short on the road but I'd probably want it a bit shorter off road (change the sprocket), the inevitable compromise of a dual sport bike I guess.

The jury's out on the seat. It's very hard but my arse felt fine after 100 miles, partly 'cos you can move around on it I think......anyway, if it turns out to be a liability other, comfier seats are available.

Handling feels good, very predictable, and despite the 21" front wheel she's dead quick to change direction, the consequence of being so light. Above 70ish she's a bit flighty, nothing scary and no different to any big dirt bike I've owned, another consequence of the lack of weight. The bike came with TKCs, I've never tried them before. On road they seem excellent, they feel like a road tyre TBH. I'm not sure, however, that I'd want to use them off road on anything particularly challenging.

Gears just snick in smooth as anything. It's a really lovely box. I'm not sure what to think of the QS as this is the first bike I've had with one. I struggled a bit as I'm used to doing clutches changes all the time but couldn't get out of the habit of unloading the transmission myself when I went to change gear, it went against everything I know to keep the power on and let the bike sort it for me......just need time to get used to it so ended up using the super light clutch all the time.

And that's it really, I came back home with a huuuuuge smile on my face. A lovely, lovely bike :thumb2

Shit I've put on it:

Vanasche sprocket guard.
Vanasche heel plates (with Kriega loops for luggage mounting).
Perunmoto rack.
Pivotpegz.
Wings Ti silencer.
Smaller flexi plate & removal of the dangly down (ugly) extension thing.
Heated jacket and Optimate leads fitted.

Shit still to fit:

Vanasche polymer bash plate.
Vanasche fuel filler.
Heated grips.
Side stand switch eliminating dongle thingy.
Oberon clutch slave.

Stuff still to do:

I've an extension plate for the rack and will fit Kriega loops to that. Then it's a case of sussing out how to fit my old Kriega 'Adventure' soft luggage.
I need to work out a way of fitting loops to the small rack without having to remove them when I want to fit the extension plate (underside maybe) so I can carry a US10 with tools/sarnies in
Ditto sorting out fitting my old KTM tank bag.
Get some decent hand guards.

Looking good !!!

Get that Oberon fitted sooner than later !
Agree with you about the fuelling.Mine is perfect too.
QS is very good.Like all quickshifters, I don’t tend to use it from 1st to 2nd and it’s better under load but its very smooth both up and down.
I’ve got the short baffle in my Wings.Too loud with it totally removed.
You didn’t get the Wings carbon heat shield ?

Andres - please explain how it is possible to have soooooo much fun when you are not even on the bestist bike in the whole wide world? :nenau

.......PS - you don’t need to explain really as I already know ;)

KTM /Husky Power Parts hand guards seem to work well. I think they might just be repackaged Acerbis that might be even cheaper?

Worth fitting. 701 levers are £50+

£50! Blimey...........and yes, I was thinking of the Husky guards :thumb2

Andres, there is a thread on ADVrider of an Ausie building one with the Aurora kit. He designed and build a pannier rack that bolts on behind the foot peg, at the rear rack (Perun) and looks like a sturdy frame. May give you an idea what you want.

I actually have it bookmarked :D

https://advrider.com/f/threads/husqvarna-701rr-builds.1207074/

That's some thread, he's done a nice job.

I'm not a fan or pannier racks and don't envisage ever needing the potential extra load carrying ability over throw-overs.

I'm hoping to use these old Kriega bags that that I used on my old Husky. They run a strap to the heel plate and rear rack, I'll be playing with the set up some time this week (that's a crap photo and my rucksack is in the way but you get the idea I'm sure).

Come on.

You know it needs another cylinder, a more comfy seat and Japanese reliability to make it the bestist MSAB in the world... ever!
