Hi all,
Planning to go over the V85TT to check tightness of fasteners etc.
At first service the dealer should be doing this, but that is not until 900 miles.
Guzzi workshop manual does not give this information as far as I can see.
Try as I may, cannot find online the torque values for the following:

Sump guard
Oil drain plug
Oil filter cover
Gearbox drain and filler
Bevel box drain and filler
Rocker covers

Also, I notice that one end of the front axle has a notchin the sidewall, wondered if there is a specific tool for the purpose that I have not got in my quite extensive collection ?

If the data is obvious or readily available, let's put it down to senior moments.

Thanks

There’s a post on the Moto Guzzi V85TT Facebook page to various manuals including a workshop manual with Torque settings. Here’s a link https://lookaside.fbsbx.com/file/NM...4VwkFQVs9wt--Dr1SNJP71BAzMWZAft4MBGpd12m92qFg. I suspect you need to a member of the group to view it.

That manual should tell you how to remove the front wheel. I haven’t had to do so yet but it looks pretty much like most front wheels to me.

Thanks, that is the manual I have searched and cannot find the info.
Looked again, it seems the front axle end has a pair of notches in the tubular end, so I presume these are used to locate a tool onto to stop it spinning while you undo the 30mm nut on the other end. But which tool have you guys been using I wonder ?
Any ideas please.

P.S Have heard it said that some data is not easy to get, so a degree of common has in the past served me well, so no problem but ideally being anal etc.

Sorry Austin can't view the link, but other manuals I have seen do not make it clear which tool to use to stop the axle spinning when you loosen it. Looks like some sort of circular shaft with a couple of opposing tabs which slot onto the hollow spindle end and the cut outs. Guzzi manual below p125 & 127 have pics of the spindle end. Anyone had the front wheel out knows what I mean, any ideas ?

The manual / section I was referring to is the same as page 122 in your link.*** No mention of a tool or need to hold the opposite end of the spindle. As I said I haven’t removed the front wheel yet so don’t know if something is necessary or not. Best thing is to join the Facebook group -the “Moto Guzzi V85TT” group is the bigger of a few on FB - and ask there.

Or just have a go, see what happens and post up on here how you resolved it. A big flat bladed screwdriver or even just some pliers would probably hold it until the nut began to grip.

*** a few months back there was a lot of confusion on the V85TT Facebook groups with respect to electronic copies of workshop manuals. There seemed to be 3 or 4 subtly different versions knocking about (thisoldtractor etc) some with just minor bits of info missing like torque values, some with whole sections missing or different information about the same procedures. I am pretty sure the one I posted a link to is generally accepted as being the definitive version. Afaik it’s a scan of Teasdales own workshop manual. It might have been put up there by Wrinkleyowlie actually.

I would loosen the big nut prior to releasing the pinch bolts on the opposite fork. Then undo the big nut to the thread end and use a rubber mallet or wooden block to start the spindle out. Unless it's corroded that should be enough for you to withdraw it. You may need to grip it with a set of smooth jawgrips like Knirps.

I doubt that you'll need to have anything to fit the square recesses on the spindle end.

That notched design is has been used by Ducati (and others?) since hollow axles arrived in the mid 90's. If you have the correct tool the notches allow easy rotation of a sticky/seized axle tho' this can also be bodged by very careful use of a screwdriver. IIRC the manuals also talk about aligning the notches in a particular way when refitting the front wheel but I could never work out why. Didn't strike me as critical
The tool is inexpensive & available to suit 20, 25 and 30mm diameter that I know of.
Larger diameter on later axles so probably 30mm on the Guzzi? Something like this https://www.lasertools.co.uk/product/5337/Front-Axle-Alignment-Tool-30mm-Ducati.
I've got a 25 and a 30 in my toolbox so will be able to check fitment when I finally get to pick up my v85tt next week. AT which point I shall mostly be taking the scenic route home ...Woohoo!

A big flat bladed screwdriver or even just some pliers would probably hold it until the nut began to grip.

Or, simply use the pinch bolts on the other fork leg Guzzi tell you to undo before the nut is removed?

Edit: I see Packer is ahead of me here :)

Thanks guys, no problem getting the axle out at home, but in a remote area on tour it would be good to have a "quick & easy tool" so thanks Vulpine will look into something like the laser tool. Have a great ride home. Thanks also to AustinW for the further info.

Just doing my running in service also, could not find any torque settings in that manual for oil filter bolt or oil drain plug. I did find that the factory had tightened the oil filter bolt so severely the crush washer was completely mangled to the point I thought it was not even there at first. On the other hand the oil drain plug was only a little more than hand tight and the crush washer was like new. Makes me wonder what other tightening torques have been applied elsewhere.

I tightened the oil filter cover bolt to 15 Nm and as I could not get a torque wrench on the drain bolt I just judged it myself, definitely tighter than how I found it.

Here is a shot of the two crush washers, I replaced both though the oil drain one could be reused: https://photos.app.goo.gl/TCACZAdBn7Sz7L5m9

Yes, I too found some fasteners way over tight and others too loose, caused me to question quality control in th factory.
Went round the bike using common sense approach as I also struggled to find some torque values.

I found another some other useful sources for spannering my V85TT:

I also have the workshop and owners manuals (plus others like wiring diagram and spare parts catalogues) in PDF - PM me with an email address if you want them...
