Ideal Tent For An Iceland Trip

Doing a search on google isn’t the way to do it. I’d rather hear directly from people on here who have already been and had personal experience of conditions and various tents.
Now going to look at your sensible answer of the Hilleberg variety.

Tim Olgra, the organiser of the jaunt, has voiced an opinion on Hilleberg tents several times on this forum, with reference to Iceland and other locations.

What is the internet (including UKGSer, which is nothing but a collection of bods with an affinity - or none at all - to a certain brand and model of motorbike) but a whole collection of opinions, reviews and comments, very often hands-on. But hey, it saves looking for yourself and forming an opinion, if you are busy.

:beerjug:

I use an MSR Elixir 1 .. very small and tidy. An excellent bit of kit though. Light and easy to pack into those panniers. :)

Do you think a 6’ 1” fat bloke, with gear and a big comfy airbed will fit in it? That’s the question.

But hey, a Google search turns up the dimensions, so it’s possible to compare with other tents.

I already have two tunnel tents but want something a bit more robust for the odd storm that’s possible over there.

I think you may be over thinking things.

Of course you get what you pay for like all things in life and if you have the dosh then get one of those fancy hillythings, not for me paying that kinda money and it worked out fine for me.

Don’t worry . The needy twat has got over a year to post more of this bollox.

What the fuck is wrong with you? You clearly have issues! Why do you always feel the need to chirp in with nasty unwarranted comments? Do you have to try and put people down to make yourself feel better? If you’ve got nothing sensible to contribute then kindly fuck off out of the topic.
Yes I’m going on a trip to a place I’ve never been before. Big fucking deal. I’m going to ask questions about how I need to prepare my kit and bike. I don’t want to get there and be badly prepared and ruin my time away.
You are a nasty condescending c#nt and should keep your nasty comments to yourself.

Yet Wapping can comment and that’s fine.
Like I said, Timolgra has been to Iceland many many times.
Why not just ask him what you need ?
On here you’ll get everything from a £10 Lidl tent to a £700 Hilleberg.
Or is Udders your username because you need to milk everything ?

Unlike that horrible man Arsey I'm lovely so I'm gonna tell you what I used the last time I went to Iceland.......

It must be 15 years old now and is my go to one man tent when on the bike. It costs around £50 - £60 now, think it was £20 when I bought it (I'm not a cheapskate, it just happens to be cheap and do a great job). Well small, well light, well tough and has done me proud in horrendous weather.

Best thing about it you won't need to weld up a new subframe to carry it :)

Sorted, thread closed :thumb2

PS Arsey really is horrid isn't he

“Or is Udders your username because you need to milk everything ?”

Jesus Udders, even you must be smiling to yourself at that reply

Someone needs to start a spreadsheet.

I’d suggest column headings of:

Source of recommendations

Tent, make and model

Number of recommendations

Price

Availability

Weight

Colour(s)

Size, dimensions of packed tent

Size, dimensions of sleeping area, including height

Size, dimensions of any porch or storage area

Any additional ‘must have’ features, like awning or footprint, extra strong poles, quality and number of pegs, glow-in-the-dark guy ropes. And, of course, tarps.

Has the tent been used by the person in Iceland or in Tesco’s car park or the garden at home or in Spain or never used at all, as it’s just nice to look at and dream?

Then devise some sort of scoring and weighting system. For example, would advice from Arsey outweigh advice from Outtomunch, if so by what? Is colour more important than a porch? Does the ability to pack it into a pannier (maybe at the expense of something else) trump just strapping it to the back seat? The latter may require a separate tab, as to which straps to use and even whether to put into into a bag with other stuff, like a stove, a chair, the sleeping mat, a head torch (which one) and the wet wipes. I’d suggest several tabs and maybe creating some sort of pivot table, along with a method of linking several tabs and the data they hold together. Excel is a powerful tool, use it. We have people in the office who do this stuff all day long and get paid for it; amazing when you think about it.

My opinion like others, is just an opinion. :)
I use mine for 4 to 5 five weeks at a time so can justify the expense.
Folks on these trips have experienced everything from a drenching, having their tent poles snapping in the wind to perfect weather with a pop up tent, so it depends how lucky you feel :D

A one man tent at my age can be miserable in foul weather but add a decent well pitched tarp and it becomes luxury.

If you want bomb proof, I'd go Hilleberg Tarra, after my Vaude finally died on me in New Zealand I went for this on the advice on here and it's been a great tent, apart from zips being temperamental at times. Nothing better than waiting out a storm or a bit of wind in a trusty tent where the poles are not going to snap. A Tesco tent can also do the job, it's all about where you pitch.

There's also a link to inside of the tent, if you click on the John RTW bit.

I can’t see any kind of porch on that tent. If so, you have nowhere to put your panniers at night. I’d not be happy risking them out at night, in the dark, on their own.

Yes the ultimate, I have a Tarra which I've used a few times in Iceland.
Downside is the weight, 5kg for a 2 man tent.
Ok it has 2 vestibules and will never blow away or break.
With hindsight as far as Hilleberg go's, my conclusion was the Nammatj 2GT is probably the best of all worlds for a bikers tent. I went a different direction though with a very small tent plus tarp.

Do love the Tarra though :)

I have a Nammatj 2 GT, with its footprint. Its packed size is actually not much larger than my one man, Akto. I’d certainly recommend it. Why the GT version? The vestibule bit is good for dumping your clobber in. We had some horrendous rain and wind in France, strong enough to drive a frog into my tent. Everything stayed dry, including me and the frog.

Sleeping area is big enough for me at six foot, plus a sensible sized inflatable sleeping mat and even a camp bed, though I’d not bother with the latter.

I was lucky enough to pick up the Nammatj in Sweden when the exchange rate was favourable and there was a sale on.

Mine blows like that from the inside out from time to time :D

Well in your search if you fancy a Hillyberg Akto with footprint, I have one that has only been used for 5 nights in its life, so as new. I can't see me camping in the near future, so may part with it :)

Why would you take your panniers off the bike!?
Helmet on the mirror, boots on your upturned chair legs etc etc. :)
