At risk of upsetting you HD owners, but it's the nearest thing to my Buell, I wonder if anyone knows of an engine specialist who might be interested in doing some work on my Buell lump?

Bike is an 06 Buell XB12X Ulysses which lunched it's top end on the rear cylinder in France. This happened a few years ago (er, about 8 or 9 I think), and it pissed me off so I just got the thing recovered and chucked it in the shed and ignored it.

Anyway, decided to look at it, dropped the engine and whipped the rear head off - lo & behold a broken spring on the (I think), inlet valve. End result is bent valve, a few dings on the piston, and a slight groove in the bore.

I want to get it rebuilt, not just the one cylinder but I want it completely overhauled - if possible upgraded a bit for a tad more oomph but that's not critical. I'm looking for someone who's a whizz on what is essentially a 1200cc Sportster engine, if not an actual Buell specialist.

Anyone have any contacts or can refer me on to someone? I'm based near Bath but can of course travel a reasonable distance to take it to someone.

Thanks.
Clive

Check out Matts Machine shop in Wales.

I know a very good guy, but based near Portsmouth?

He’s not on the internet, all word of mouth ... ex HD Mechanic .. now independent

Let me know if you need a number

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I'll contact Matt's Machine shop and Fast Lane Head Works.

Twizzle, do you have a number and/or email address please? Portsmouth isn't too far for me to go.

Elgringo, thanks for that, but I know of Lightning (had a wheel bearing done there once) and choose not to use them (shame, as they are very close to me).

Any more recommendations appreciated. I'm not desperate to get this done, and I want it done properly.

Oh yeah, he will insult your Buell, the XB was a BIC bike.

Go on then Att, you've got me, what's a BIC bike (I'm guessing the word cuunts is in there) :D

Thanks Scooter Boy & Nick, much appreciated.

It is Maz`s description, as in BIC razors...Disposable. I had the STT XB12 up until a couple or three years back, went back to a tube framed.
The engine on the XB is such a bastard to work on because you cannot take the gearbox out, you have to split the cases and all that entails with the crank.

He is not cheap, but he is an engineer and probably the best when it comes to Buells, he will tell you the bike is not worth it financially I would expect, but if it just needs the top end doing, then no problem.

Ah ok, yeah I know they were never considered to be 'proper' Buells, but fuck it, I like it. It's been sat in my shed for the last 8 years or so, and is pretty much worthless as it is, even if I parted it out it's not going to get me much. It's the most comfortable bike I've ever ridden, and I bought it new, so I figured I owe it the decency of spending a few quid on it and using it again.

Ta, I'll get in touch with them.

My STT was the better bike in my opinion...But the mileage was getting up and the prices were good, so I got rid, I have an X1 now and love it, but it does not handle as good as the XB STT.

Yours does have the added attraction of being the only Harley V-twin engined thing I've ever ridden. Nice chassis, powered by a steam engine.... :D

If Boz is still going in Kent, best man for the job,be wary of self declared experts on HD engines, plenty about.Matts machine shop also good, don't be in a hurry though! Will check out Boz and pm you if required

Can't help but following with interest, I nearly bought a Ulysses back in the day but the salesman was a _____.......
I often wonder what the ownership experience would have been like.

Another vote here for Maz at the emporium. Helped me out loads when I had my X1 lightning, and he is definitely someone that tells it as it is with no sugarcoating!

Maz is a fucking star, miserable as fucking sin but we all love him...And you get the truth whether you want it or not, no bullshit...Best Buell mechanic in the world I would reckon.
