Riding back from the East Midlands breakfast on Saturday on my 1981 G/S I suddenly found the free play in the twist grip had jumped from next to nothing to a quarter turn before the revs increased making it a little awkward to ride.

My extensive searching Google failed to give me any answers.

The carbs remained in balance but not opening fully.

Today I decided to check the throttle mechanism and quickly found the problem.

The teeth on the twist grip and bevel ring were badly worn.

New parts ordered so hopefully back on the road very soon.

Anything I need to be aware of when installing the new parts or lining up the teeth?

I checked that I have the correct top cover when ordering.

Thanks Gerry

There are two scribe marks, one on throttle tube,
One on the bevel/chain assy
They need to be aligned.
Apart from that,should be straightforward
I never knew that! I’ve always positioned the chain so it’s at maximum stretch and the throttle tube so that it can fully open within the constraints of the stops.

Photo of the lining up the marks is shown in the Haynes manual.

I have just double checked my other airhead (R100R) as I had opened it up to compare with the G/S.

Thankfully I had not disturbed things and the marks still line up (phew).
