I noticed a friend of mine using Castrol Valvemaster in his 1983 ST .

When i asked him about it he said the valve seats were "soft".

Is this true ?

Should i be using it in my 82 G/S ??

It's a lead replacement additive so unleaded can be used and, in answer to your question, yes, probably.

Ive allways used it on my old bike (1961) but thought that the G/S was ok.

I havn't had the G/S for long and not done many miles so ill start putting it in.

Thanks for the info.

The ST was made at the time when BMW were changing the valve seat material (or so I was told) and some do suffer valve seat regression , while some other ones do not.
I was unlucky in that mine did suffer regression to the point I was unable to set the valve clearances, so had to get the heads done.

Hopefully, your ST will be one of the lucky ones that go on for 100’ of thousands of miles with no regression what-so-ever..

I never used any additive, but don’t know if that was what caused my problems, or whether it would have done any good if I had used it.

i was running an Escort mk2 , when the ho-ha went on about valves , doing 100 mile round trip commute , did +20k miles with no problems. worry about it if they ever give a problem. just monitor the clearances.
