How to play avi on MacBook?

Trying to play avi files via quicktime but not recognised so tried to download something to play them but my macbook doesn't't recognise the program (Perian).

Any whizkids with advice as to how I can open the avi files?

MacBook Air 2020.

VLC plays everything.

VLC will literally play anything you feed it.
Even truncated video streams or broken files. Been using it for a couple of decades now and it still amazes me sometimes

There is/was a version for the Apple TV too, to play local network files.
