Quite a nice, reasonably compact (150 km) jaunt out from the famous Italian ski resort, courtesy of Motorrad & Reisen magazine 105.

Here is the jaunt, downloaded and displayed in Pocket Earth Pro on an iPad. It is that easy.

The magazine I picked up ‘free’ via Readly.

Thank you, Steve.

I have a bias towards the Dolomites / northern Italy, over the traditional Austrian or Swiss Alps.

Indeed, being a ski resort it has lots of hotels (they are all friendly to anyone who happens to arrive on a motorcycle) and plenty of choices of restaurants. My only tip might be to check if you intend to arrive late between the end of the summer season and the start of the winter season proper, as some hotels close for their own holidays and any maintenance.

Here’s some simple screenshots, lifted out of the magazine. The jaunt took the theme of ‘Apples and ham’, both of which the region is famous for, following a mixture of valley roads and then climbing up.

I did a fly drive to Verona with my teenage son and had a Renault Clio. We had stayed in Limone sul Garda and drove up to Riva, then joined that route at the SW corner. My son was rather worried about the narrowness of the SP53 road, carved into the side of the ravine and the sheer drop into the valley on his side. He was also fascinated with the satnav telling us our altitude as we climbed up to MdC. We then carried on with the same loop, down to Lake Molveno and back to our hotel on Lake Garda.

The pile of shit Clio had drum rear brakes which locked up at altitude. I think the fluid had boiled as the drums were very hot. As it was only 4C at the higher altitudes, they soon cooled and we carried on.

I keep meaning to go back to explore on the bike but have yet to do it. I think it is one of those areas many people ignore as they tend to head to the roads east of the A22 Autostrada. This would be a nice day trip for anyone staying on Lake Garda.

We were there early in the summer season as it was our May half term trip. MdC was very quiet and still a bit chilly so some places were still in their inter season break and I imagine like some French resorts, a lot of places just won't open in the summer.

We had an old Hillman as a family car (thank you Dunlop) in the early 70’s, the brakes of which boiled their fluid in the Alps.

Thank you Wessie, for the endorsement of the area; indeed it is often ignored.

I should of course have added, if you arrive early, just after the ski season finishes, too. Thanks for the additional tip.

Fabulous area. Skied it many times.

Still prefer the Sella Ronda region though but it doesn’t matter really. Trentino and Veneto are absolutely fabulous. Ladin culture means great hospitality, friendly people and good value for money Awesome food, wine and beer combined with some of the finest mountain scenery in the world.
