I've been sending some Google Map routes to my iPhone to open on the BMW Connected facility and it has worked well using a free website called mapstogpx.com. I'm probably teaching everyone to suck eggs but the steps I took are -

1. Create route in Google Maps on computer (MacBook Air in my case)
2. Click the share icon
3. Copy the link to the map
4. Go to mapstogpx.com and paste the link in the relevant section
5. GPX downloads to computer. I then save it to the downloads file in my iCloud Drive
6. Go to BMW Connected, Planned - Route Import - Browse and select the GPX you downloaded,
7. Bob's your uncle, the route is there to select and follow

I copied this post from a thread in the pub section, as it might help some bods use Google maps to create routes to use on their iPhone.

You could use the same method to create a route in Google maps, then put it through mapstogpx.com and from there into a Garmin device, too. If doing that, do check the end result, before you ride off into the distance. The chap says as much in his opening blurb.
