The trip odometers surely can be reset. On my 2010 GS (same era as your RT) pressing the button on the display quickly cycles between overall mileage and the two trips. Holding it down when displaying a trip mileage resets it. IIRC changing the clock is done from the button that cycles the display between clock, tyre pressures, average speed, etc.
