Phase one of the teach-yourself-to-paint exercise is complete, I now have a fuel tank to work on.

The question is, what bike did it come from?

I initially thought that the original acrylic tank badges had been sprayed over, but on removal I see that they are in fact metal. I wonder whether they would have been hand painted with the logo?

Taking the grey primer down does not reveal any other colours below it - the primer's direct to the metal.

Yes I thought that too. and remember the badges are metal, which is really strange.

As there are no layers of paint, Just a red base coat then the primer - we have to assume that the tank was at some point taken back to bare metal and repainted... or that it has never been painted and was perhaps provided to the factory in primer??

The mounting holes show no signs of wear at all.

A further clue - are these mounting points for a bicycle pump?

The mounting holes are for the brackets that hold the knee pads on and the two mounts at the bottom of the tank hold the air pump on :thumby:

Did you buy it at Kempton Paul ?

You need to find out when BSA started using the teardrop badge ;)

Yep, found it at Kempton.

I am such a muppet - I was looking for the cheapest tank I could find - I genuinely just want something to learn to paint on.. make mistakes.. do it again etc.

So after seeing a great many rough Bantam tanks (as noted above!) with their ugly shape and upstanding seams for a min of £40, when I saw the lovely shape of this and negotiated £30, it was a deal.

However, because it's genuinely old and interesting, I am now feeling responsible for it, and rather than cocking around, feel I should do the right thing and bring it back to something like original... There probably are very few around (and this one's in great nick) so I feel like I'm its custodian!

Bollocks, should have gone for the Bantam..! :aidan

Use it to practice on THEN restore to original and sell it.

Win win.

They're bound to know

I would love it if they told you it was a tank from a very rare model and you're only in to it for £30 :thumb

I think I'd be able to force myself to feel a little less attached to it...

Early replies from the Beezer chaps suggest an M20 tank, as you thought, modified to take the teardrop badges. Why on earth would someone go to that trouble?

Thanks Neil!

The Beezer owners club scratched their combined head for a good while before someone suggested that.

You win...errr....something.
