Just in the North of Spain heading home and 6th gear seems to be fubar.

It seems to be jumping in and out of 6th as soon as you touch the throttle.

All other gears are fine.

checked oil level and it seems fine and the oil is pretty much spotless.

Anyone have any wisdom on these things or should I just nurse it home in 5th and then set fire to it when back in Blighty?

5th sounds like a plan steady away unless you can get it fixed.

Hope you get back ok.

I wouldn’t be too keen to ride it with a gearbox issue, purely because of the increase damage you may be doing…..unless it’s under Harley Warranty? In that case… give them a call?

Did you get sorted pal ?

Internet talks of some failed gearboxes due to a faulty batch of case hardening..

No chance of fixing it I think.

It’s riding fine, up to 5th so I’m going to continue on. If I don’t it’s going to be a nightmare with COVID test in France etc (I’m booked in to get it done tomorrow morning).

Bike has 18k miles on it, so it’s a piss poor show!

Never mind, I’ll be the test monkey to see if it’s built well enough to get me home or it shits itself into a million pieces, I’m not going to let it dampen my holiday :okay

…. It’s a doddle to rearrange/rebook Covid tests in France.

I think you will find its just the corners of the shift dog are rounded off (possibly the Case hardening problem)

Just make do with 5th and avoid 6th as its just making it worse

Probably okay to ride home but keep an eye on gearbox oil for sparkles!

Well it got me home, time to find out what the issue is.

Suspect it’s going to need a full internal replacement, Harley don’t show the 6th gear or the selector forks as purchasable parts???

Assume you are out of Warranty?

I reckon its a five speed box only FlipFly forgot ...... :D

(we had an old FJR like that ... I was always looking for another gear !!)

Hope you get it sorted Phil!

I'll have tuna mayo on a granary bap please! :D

Yep.

Spoke to a few people today, looks like it’s more than likely the dogs on 6th but there’s a potential issue with getting the parts from Harley so possibly a new gear set (£790 from Jersey HD) + bearings + working out how to install it all.

Never had a gearbox go in all the years of owning a bike and this one is the lowest mileage bike I’ve ever owned…..quite shit really!

That is shit…….can’t imagine this is a diy job… I’d have thought installing a gearbox with all the relevant complications is a specialist job…

I’d be calling Harley for some goodwill….

If you have to fund it yourself, and you intend keeping the bike is there a Baker 6 speed gear set avaliable, far better than OEM, Good firm to deal with. I had one of the first 6 speed Dynas and that had a couple of recalls for transmission issues, selector detent springs was one if I remember correctly . Good luck!

Not sure, but I won’t be putting a grudge box in at $3200

I’m keeping the bike, as much as I feckin loathe the bastard thing, I also kind of love it too :thumb

It can sit in the garage for a 6 months whilst I contemplate it’s fate, thank feck for the GS parked next to it :D

I have owned Harleys for 45 years and now run vintage models, always had a modern model, Road King,Dyna etc.But I have become a GS owner and wish I had done so years ago, as much as I enjoy my Harleys I will concentrate on pre 1950,s from now on and enjoy long days on the GS!
