With the potential of fuel rationing, it was an easy decision to chop in the sub 30 mpg 250 triple for a more frugal 250 thumper. Sellers photo as I have spent the last two days going through it mechanically. Lots of loose bolts. Quite tidy for a 50 year old bike that has basked in the US sunshine.
I have corrected the laid back bars and the next task is up the gearing which is currently suitable for a trials bike!

A mate has owned one 25 years, can be a pig to get running correctly after being in storage for any length of time

Neil its interesting you say that. The previous owner spent quite a bit on a carb rebuild kit and installation. It starts and runs ok but the warm idle is erratic. It just drops from a tickover of 1200 ( set) to 900 then pops and stops. Plug is quite black but that could also be lack of use.

Ignition system is less than perfect and does not improve with age ,an iridium plug might help ,also new points and condensor and get the carb properly cleaned and it might help.

Daft thing is that the SL125's of the same era could be simply modified to 12 volts and were much better for it

Neil update , I sorted the slow running by taking your advice and cleaning the carb thoroughly. I also removed all the coil wires and cleaned up. Plus new contact breakers. Ironically I have done the reverse to an Iridium plug , research tells me these bike dont like resistor plugs. You can still buy an NGK B8EA non resistor plug , so thats in.

Plus the forks have been breathed on by no other than our own Timolgra , the only thing I need to find is an Icelandic stream to drown the bugger in :)

Gratuitous series of photos , taken yesterday, the more I ride this bike the more I like it.

Cheers guys , the exhaust is original and has a few pinholes! Currently I have plugged them with some high temp epoxy putty. Long term I need to get it tig welded. The previous owner has spent a lot on the aesthetics eg frame wheels brakes hubs cables engine being cerakoted. But Im investing in the simple stuff, re line the tank, clean the carb , clean up all the electrics coil points etc. Oil and grease all the moving parts etc. Just look at the screw heads on the points base plate! Im still looking for the points retaining screws replacement.

Use some nice stainless Allen head bolts instead.
