Iceland 2021, was it worth it?

Arrrrrgghh. That first day on the sand. That was hard work. Must have had the GSA chuck me off at least 6 times. Did I mention I hate sand. I was somewhat bruised and battered after that trail. At least I didn't break anything and managed to carry on.

I don't mind falling off, it's picking the thing I find the hard bit and that's on a light dirt bike. And then it can get into a downward spiral... exhausted from picking it up, concentration not as good, fall off again, more exhausted and so on. Not telling anyone how to suck eggs but my top tip is give yourself a couple minutes recovery between picking it up and going again.

No doubt sand technique has been discussed, I think body weight to the rear, get the front light and plenty of gas :D:D it's quite easy from this sofa :aidan
Have a great trip.

Get the front light on a GSA with 25 litres of fuel on board. You're having a laugh. :;-)

Yeah I hate friggin sand too…. :nenau. Couple of years ago in Morocco on a fully laden GSA, I had several off’s in sand. Weight back and gas it some….right. Just ended up with a bigger off and more damage to bike :blast. !!!

Sorry for the delay continuing, my apologies. We carried on through miles of black sand, easy on the nimble 500's, not so much fun on a GSA. Then the trail changed from sand to rocky and Gary decided to inspect the fauna and flora but I didn't think much of his parking. Here's one of Gary waving cheerfully, indicating what a bunch of bastards we are.

Then for some light relief from the sand, we had a few water crossings which weren't too bad.

As the day progressed the weather got worse and worse with rain, low cloud and poor visibility. We stopped at the tourist centre not far from a spectacular waterfall but saw absolutely nothing because of the fog and mist. though it was worth it, just to get in the warmth and dryness of the visitor centre. The last leg of Day 1 was a road ride to Geysir, our stop for the night; where surprisingly enough there is a bloody big geysir that explodes with a similar force to my stomach after 12 pints of stella and a vindaloo. Now the plan was to camp there.

To hell with that thinks John, Christy and myself, we chickened and booked into the local hotel that looked more like a scout hut from the outside, but was warm and dry inside with the added benefit of not having to cook a boil in the bag meal. In addition there was a supply of cold beer after a lovely warm shower. We got a few disparaging looks from the campers, but hey, cold damp tent or warm duvet? The only downside was some crazy Yank in the bar who for the first half an hour seemed very pleasant and rational before going off on a mega rant about how the election was stolen from Trump. Christy and myself made our excuses and left. John was too polite and suffered his verbal diarrhoea for quite a while longer.

Apart from the weather, a very promising start to Iceland.

And now it looks like winter has descended in full… good job your trip was in the summer!

Winter’s sudden arrival in many parts of Iceland yesterday created problems for numerous drivers, who were caught by surprise, Morgunblaðið reports. In many areas, there was a yellow weather alert due to stormy conditions, especially in the south.

The eastbound lane of Hellisheiði mountain pass, which connects the capital area and South Iceland, was closed for a while after a truck blocked two lanes. At least ten passenger cars landed off the road due to the icy conditions.

Thanks for the pics Shaun. Nice to get a few more of me. Got loads of the rest of you. I'll add some when you've done with your write up.

This was the hotel in Geysir that looked like a scout hut but provided a lovely warm bed and respite from the rain all night. The hotel was within sight of the actual geysir which was spectacular when it erupted but was rather camera shy whenever I got my camera out. Tonights destination being Siglufjordur on the North coast. Tim decided that we would take a route that promised the best of the changeable weather.

Lunch time stop in a cafe in the middle of nowhere, actually everyhting seems to be in the middle of nowhere here. John and myself, both on the same vinatge 500's swapped bikes to compare them and it cost John a lot of money as he really like the Ktech fork kit and cush drive on my bike

<a href="https://app.photobucket.com/u/BDG996/a/ed50cbaf-31cb-418a-92b6-69988d082708/p/b01dc48b-3dfe-4a02-91dd-1cd0572df9d4" target="_blank"><img src="https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/nn259/BDG996/78BAF7A0-F312-431F-A12B-062E813AD719.jpeg?width=1920&height=1080&fit=bounds" border="0" alt="78BAF7A0-F312-431F-A12B-062E813AD719"/></a>

The next trail had an interesting covering of gravel that let the bikes drift around almost as if they had a mind of their own. Much harder work on a GS, much easier for the contingent on the 500's. The next stop gave me a chance to have a closer look and admire Liam's trick 500.

The weather picked up in the afternoon, the guys on the GS's took an easier route whilst the little bikes took something a bit more challenging and meet up at some cross roads.

When we'd regrouped and stopped for fuel and a snack we were only about an hour and a half from tonight's destination, the weather changed very quickly from warm, pleasant sunshine to bloody freezing and torrential rain. The kind of rain that creeps in down the neck of your jacket, soaks your gloves and it even seems to rain on the inside of your visor. It was a pretty grim ride to Siglufjordur. We arrived piss wet through to the campsite in the middle of the town. The trio of softies headed straight for the hotel. Tim managed to blag a place indoors via his mate in the museum or some such place. Jon and Liam opted for the hotel as well but much to their disgust, Christy had secured the last room in the place for the 3 of us crammed in one room with dripping wet gear all over the place. it looked and smelt like a swamp in the morning. It continued to lash it down most of the night with only short breaks in the rain.

The locals lazing around in the hot tub drinking cocktails looked at us drowned rats on the bikes with such pity.

For some reason Liam woke up the next morning feeling pretty rough and declined to join us for the day.

Hey Gary, please feel free to add your pics whenever you want, that's be great to get a greater variety of pics in. It's not my report, it's everyone's who was there, we'll all have different pics and perspectives. John and Christy despite having GS's don't seem tp frequent UKGSer. Cheers mate.

Another view of the quad bikes. I was disappointed to not see how they are loaded /unloaded.

I think I must have had a bad chip the night before and was not feeling up for the days ride - nothing to do with hot whiskey's - never again.

Jon and Harold were good enough to stay behind and do a bit of local sight seeing while I enjoyed the breakfast of champions to see if could come back to life - failed.

Easy day's road ride a bit later to meet the guys at the next stop.

Liam, Jon and Harold opted for the relaxed day in view of the previous night, so the rest of us headed off into the wilds again into scenery somewhat like Scotland. The weather was overcast but DRY, Thank the Lord for that after yesterday afternoon's deluge. Nice easy trails and stunning scenery.

Up till now the trails had been perfect for Gary on his big GSA, then things turned a bit sandy and Gary bailed out. I can't say I blamed him but the next few hours were a real gas on the smaller bikes. We all got a bit giddy and absolutely loved the fast flowing trails, sand or not, though John did decide to go for a lay down off the track for a rest, sadly no pictures of his crash.

The final run into Husavik, our destination for the night and the RV with the rest of the guys resulted in a last blast up a big hill to a TV or radio mast high above Husavik. this was another enthusiastic riot of a ride up and down the hill with stunning views from the top. Bloody windy on top and a bit chilly with the wind but well worth the extra ride. You can see Husavik to the left.

A few guys went into town to the local chippy, boil in the bag stuff for the rest plus a few beers, comparing notes for the day and generally talking shit. great way to finish the day.

Tim, help what's the name of the big waterfall in the pictures above please?

Oh yes, Tims little short cut through that gate and over the top. Bugger me that you as hard work on the descent in that sand. I'd forgotten about that bit.

I was glad when I got back to the bottom I can tell you.

I have to admit feeling a little guilty at that point Garry and that the next long trail had 'Sandur' in its name was probably a decider for you. :)
