Iceland 2021, was it worth it?

I seem to remember that wasn't the only entertainment in the bar that night ??

Some good pics here folks its brings it back when are we off again Tim ? i need to start sweet talking the misses which might be tough as I'm off to Cape town doing the garden route in Feb ? anyone knows any really expensive flower shops

Next July or Aug mate whichever suits people best.........see you at the florist :beerjug:

I'll be in touch with all those who are keen to do the 'Trip 1' on single cylinder bikes, we'll get the right group this way ;)

Another dry but cool day riding from Hasavik to Porshofn through scenery that reminded me to everything from Scotland to Morocco to Mongolia with some fabulous long trails without another soul to be seen.

Downtown in the metropolis of Porshofn, full of nightclubs, lap dancing bars and Michelin star restuarants. The choice was epic. It's also where we were reunited with the GS boys, though Tim took John and Christy on a further loop to the lighthouse at the end of the world. Pictures please Tim. My knackered knees were pleading for a rest and I wasn't going to argue so it was tents up and prepare for a night of total non debauchery. Hilleberg tents seemed quite popular amognst the crew for you tent snobs. My Rogen, Laim's Nallo 2 GT, Jon's bomb proof Staika and Tim's Soulo just for you tent snobs.

Yes Shaun, what a great day's riding that was and a real shame you couldn't join us for a few hours more in the evening.

Anyway, I'll add some photos from that quite long evening ride with John and Christy :beerjug:

Tons of driftwood all along this coast line

It would have made for an amazing wild camp but so cold and windy

Quite late before we returned to put up the tents for the night.

20210726_230629-01-X2.jpg

On this day. Harold stayed in husavik to go whale watching. Me John and Liam went a different route round the coast. Some on sublime tarmac. Most on a very loose gravel road , the weather stayed fine all day. We got it the rendezvous point early ish and hung around by the cafe/fuel station/jet wash for a what seemed like hours. Had an ice cream. Washed the bikes a little to get some of the crud off. The rest of the guys turned up and we stood around for another couple of hours. When Tim etc went up to the lighthouse we finally decided to go and set up camp. Harold rolled up a couple of hours later.

I think this was the route we took.
Halfway round we spotted a car off the side of the road, about 40 ft from the edge battered and bruised. I stopped to see if the occupants were ok. A guy stepped out of the car and put his thumbs up to indicate they were fine. I guess waiting for recovery. A sobering reminder if how quick it could go wrong on the gravel. Anyway. I had a nice showers and an early night.

Thanks for filling in the gaps Gary.

Although it looked like it was going to rain during the night it didn't. Odin saved his fecking rain till the morning when I was packing up, miserable bastard. In fact he must have had a right bollocking from the missus, Frigg, and was in a right grumpy mood deciding to take it out on us mere mortals. It was a pretty grim day. I wonder if that’s were the expression “Frigging Hell” comes from?

The weather forecast for the south of Iceland was looking better and as we couldn't actually go any further north, it was an easy decision, head south. Jon and Liam departed at high speed in search of luxury whilst the rest of the motley crew followed suit at a more leisurely pace.

We did ride over one of Icelands highest roads but didn't see a thing as visibility was nil. Even worse when you wear glasses that steam up, with the type of rain that seems to somehow manage to rain inside as well as the outside of your visor. As a result I didn't take many pictures. Kind of sums the day up when one of the highlights was stopping in a Subway for lunch and try to dry our gloves out.

It was like standing naked in a car wash with a bag over your head for 8 hours but not quite as much fun. It was the kind of day where we actually tempted Tim to stay in a hotel instead of camp and that's a rarity apparently. The wonders of Booking.com led us to Djupivogur and a haven of warmth and wallet pain but it was worth every penny. Not only did my room reek of that stench of drying wet bike gear that I'm sure we're all familiar with, as my room was at the end of the corridor; i spread my tent out in the corridor to dry it out. I turned the hotel into a semblance of a refugee camp. Nice hotel, great food and cold beer. Not a bad end to the day.

Dropping out of the clouds.

Great update again Shaun.

Late morning we stopped late morning in the pouring rain trying to find some shelter outside a shop then realised we were right next to a warm cafe in a beautiful old building. It was run by the 'interesting woman' ;) who had previously been an opera singer in Reykjavik.

Outside was a memorial to a poet who had died in this building (rumoured suicide), desperately cold temperatures and desperate times had forced him away from his homeland in the very north.

The dry and warm hotel at the end of that day was very welcome, thanks!! :beerjug:

Thanks Tim, I couldn’t remember if this was the day of the deluge before the sumptuous Subway or the following morning, nice cafe with lovely hot chocolate

packed up in the morning and went back to the fuel station/cafe/ jetwash and inside they were serving a buffet breakfast which we all enjoyed if I remember correctly.
On this day Harold and I decided not to do the route over the mountain. Probably just as well. We had a very cold 100 miles or more of very wet weather but on tarmac, it was probably twice as far to where we met up with the others at the subway. Bite to eat and a drink.
After leaving here Tim took us on a wonderful trail over some fantastic scenery. It was still very wet and the trail was very slippery with a lot of steel hills. I thoroughly enjoyed this trail. I went off in front to try to get some photos of the guys coming along the last part, then a few more miles on tarmac to the hotel, I think it may have been John who ran out of fuel along this stretch. Be had a couple of litresas a back up packed away, I waited a couple of miles down the road, then we went on to catch up with the others.

when i saw you Liam the next morning i thought that's it I'm giving up drinking

After yesterday's deluge it seemed positively tropical again in Djupivogur when we were packing up. Liam and Jon were well ahead as they booked earlier return flights so the rest of us. Today was more of a tourist day and road riding round the ring road as we were heading for the big tourist attraction of Vatnjokull. The largest glacier/ice sheet in Europe which covers approximtely 8% of Icelands surface.

Wikipedia will give you facts such as it covers 7,900 sq km, that's BIG, has an average thickness of 1,250 ft and a maximum thickness of 3,120 ft. Over 3,000 feet thick ice sheet, That's nuts, thats mind bogglingly thick. That's almost as thick as a lad at work who's van wasn't running very well. Another guy said to him, he should flush the engine out. Monday morning, he chugged into work with clouds of smoke and steam coming out of the exhaust. When asked what the hell was happening, he revealed that he had drained the engine oil, put a garden hose in the oil filler and flushed the engine with tap water, let it drain before filling with fresh engine oil. Yes, it's true.

Although I've said the ice cap is big, it's only when you're riding along the ring road for a good few hours seeing glaciers flowing down valleys, but realise that these aren't seprate glaciers, each one is just a tentacle from the main ice cap.

We stopped at a large car park by a bridge and a melt water lagoon filled with ice bergs drifting out to the sea. No matter how much you've read or seen on TV about global warming and it's effects, it doesn't prepare you for the sights of a glacier calfing and the ice bergs being swept ot to sea, especially when you find out that this lagoon didn't exist until relatively recently. The lagoon narrows down to a bottleneck where the river runs out to the sea underneath the bridge which leads to an ice dam forming, restricitng the flow of the water and bergs. It's both majestic and quite scary, hearing the grinding of the ice, the cascading water trying to escape and then Sammy the seal, swims around with a care in the world. All very stunning and thought provoking. However basic instinct meant my thoughts were provoked by food and John's by the need for petrol.

Like a prize dick, I left my spotlights on which were stupidly wired direct to the battery and flattened my battery (that's been rectified now), so had to go and scrounge a set of jump leads of a local. Luckily there's several Icelandic 4 x 4 pick ups that look as if they're prepared for Armagedon, rather than just an imbecilic English idiot.

On our way again John ran out of petrol a couple of miles short of petrol much to Christey's amusement. After fuel, the next stop was another sight Iceland seems to be over endowed with, waterfalls. Pretty simple though, throw in a cliff and a river and hey presto, waterfall, could do with a few more of those in the Sahara but Iceland is greedy and keeps most of them to themselves.

Next stop is a very scenic campsite, complete with beer from the shop, so it's tents up, stoves out and beer. Happiness.
