ANOTHER PROJECT....

Gotta be red for me Steve. My mate had one, when I had my Puch VZ50 - I didn't have a hope of keeping up with him, until he rode it headlong into a ditch down near Camber Sands on a holiday :D That slowed him down. Always sound fantastic from where I was sitting (usually 50 metres or more behind him breathing in his 2T fumes.....)

Great little bike.

Good thread this; i have to say the Blue and yellow one takes me back to that period although i never owned one myself; looking forward to seeing this finished.:beerjug:

I like the red as its the classic colours, however that blue frame and yellow just looks sooooo nice.

The Gilera 50 moped was the first motorcycle that I rode ( but not mine ), 1977. Distant memory is a yellow colour .

Mr Smudger. Theres a bike mechanic who lives at Hinton Charterhouse who has several of these that he has restored to show room condition.

Hi Colin, is that the chap just over the crossroads on the way to Peasedown? Do you have a contact for him?

Progress...

I bought a job lot of NOS parts plus 2 Gilera 50 Trials bikes! The 2 Trials are OKish to be honest ill probably manage one good one out of the both bikes as one of the frames is cracked, it could be welded easily but not sure what ill do with that yet..

In all the NOS parts i have some rare/expensive stuff! OE Headlamp/OE rear light/Speedo/ Most of the pedal gear/front hub/front and rear suspension units/tanks/seats, plus loads more...

The plan is to make the Touring, then loosely build a Trials, then see what's left, maybe build a 'special'?

The Gilera 50 moped was the first motorcycle that I rode ( but not mine ), 1977. Distant memory is a yellow colour .
Same here….I think….but 1981.
My old school mate Craig turned 16 a few months before me and turned up at mine on his. But I cant remember for sure if his was a Gilera or a Garelli. He had one and another mate had the other, I ended up with a Fantic. But I had my very first go on Craigs up a private lane opposite my estate that first time he came round on his.
Craig turned out to be a hopeless rider. Crashed into the back of another mate on the way to school on his 16th birthday, the first day legal to ride! Crashed again which wrote it off, bought a fsie and crashed that on its maiden ride only minutes after collecting it. Bought a Fantic which just about lasted to his 17th birthday. Years later bought a bandit to commute, crashed that. Another few years on bought another bandit while working in Brunai, crashed that, broke his leg too. Last time I saw him he had to head back for the inquest into who’s fault that crash was. Not seen him since then.

So, like i said, the job lot i bought consisted of some real good spares, plus 2 Gilera 50 Trials bikes.

The engine on one is good, the other has a cracked case on the chain side (standard) so the plan is to make 1 good one from both bikes, then sell off the excess spares maybe, or build a special?

The frame for the touring has gone to the blasters to be cleaned up and primed as i haven't decided what to do with it yet colour wise so while the frame and swing arm are away i thought i may as well have a go at dry building the Trials. All looks like its straight and will build nicely, here's a few pics.

So, a bit more time on my hands now means i can turn my attention to this once again.

Frame and swing arm now powder coated and left to harden for a few months, meant i could start to think about getting this built.

I stripped and rebuilt the engine, and have now painted it in readiness to mount it in the frame. The front forks are OK, little bit of pitting, but not too bad, these will go in for now, as soon as the new top bearings arrive. Then its onwards and upwards!

I have 2 new wheel rims, stainless steel, and am going to order spokes/nipples next week.

Stay tuned folks!
