Hi guys,

Fed up with being caged in my Vienna apartment I decided the South of Spain, its sun and warm weather was worth a little pain for some R&R. Yesterday I left Vienna Austria at 6am. It was a mild 9oC and dry. Getting to Spain means crossing the Alps or taking a very long detour through Germany and France. The Alps was the pain of choice. Temps kept descending to -2oC, snow kept building up to a metre or so on the road side though the roads were dry and clean. Welcome to Austria, snowy roads are swept multiple times a day and well gravel/salted. Once on the south side of the Alps and at lower altitudes in Italy temps started to warm on virtually empty Autostradas (zero Covid control or any control whatsoever at the Austrian/Italian border). Before arriving at the Italian Coast near Genoa you have to transit some mountains, most through tunnels (20+) and across very tall bridges spanning ravines. By this time it was dark and then the real fun began. Temps rose by 10oC from one side of a tunnel to the other then a further 5-10 degrees once the other side of the mountains following the coast road toward France. Everything on my bike which had been cold soaked for 8-9 hours steamed up, mirrors, TFT, visor, windscreen etc and so did the weather, producing a dense fog. Exiting one tunnel the temp climbed to 21oC before settling down in the mid teens, heavy rain then started for a few Kms clearing the fog and washing the condensation of my bike, I've never welcomes rain so much, then hey presto clear skies arriving at my first nights hotel in a little coastal Italian town called Andora.

As you may imagine such a ride is not doable, well at least not for me at 66 years young without specific kit. The mainstay was a 'Warm and Safe' heated shirt and a pair of glove liners from the USA, plugged directly into the bike via an SAE plug to the heated gear battery controlled by a remote bluetooth twin channel controller velcroed on top of my Nav6 for easy access. One channel for the shirt, one for the gloves allowing independent temp control. A pair of Alpaca socks, Daytona Boots, thermal base layers all round and a Klim Hardanger Suit. All of which in combination performed flawlessly save the glove liners which semi burnt between my fingers unbeknown to me until I took the ensemble off at the hotel. No damage done though. The tenderness and redness had disappeared by morning. Other essential kit, again for me, is an RDL riders seat, which is utterly superb, worth every cent, allowing 1,000 mile days without so much as a pinch. A Puig Touring Screen with factory aerofoil, lower pegs 300mm, a full set of Bumot aluminum luggage with a Wunderlich Top Case Elephant bag on the top box and a BMW rack bag (which also acts as a back rest secured to a CyMarc luggage rack replacing the pillion seat.

Today is a day off whilst a rain front goes through then tomorrow the Cote d'Azur and a hotel in the Camargue for some fresh seafood. The weather forecast is for weeks of sun and temps rising to 15-20oC in the south of Spain. Happy days and worth the dash through the cold etc. Happy New Year........:beerjug:

Seems like every season in 24 hours!
Really useful list of equipment but did you pack your speedos for the Spanish Costa beaches?

LOL++, I don't think even the nudist loving French etc would permit such a sight as me in speedo's. All of the riding apparel and the RDL is very much the product of trial and error, mostly on my K1600 GTL which was swapped for the GSA in May last year. Great bike and better than the GTL for me anyway, doing long distance touring in comfort, not to mention the unbelievable suspension and the freedom of a 31 litre tank with 50 Mpg+. Stopped for fuel twice en route starting from full and still have well over 200 kms left. Take it easy......;-)

Indeed I would and probably a dead frog at that......;-) I think you'll find the zero in 20 is actually a letter 'o' indicating degrees, for the record......Happy New Year ;-)

i was meant to be in Italy for new year , and be in Limoges tonight ...but i'm not :( i'm at home.

Surprised that no checks at the border.

You would certainly get a good leg stretch with 300mm lower pegs. Hope you have that bike protected against salt. Great report.

There's never been tbh. Traveled by road to Italy a few times during covid, no one checks anything.

Seems like a great trip BigT. Enjoy the Spanish weather. I'm really hoping to be around there (with the bike) soon-ish.

Hi guys, after a two day stop over at the Hotel Garden, Andora, Italy for some R&R (€42 per night secure parking + comfortable + good internet + a more than reasonable breakfast for the price) particularly as a weather front passed by yesterday, spent today cruising along the SS1 coast road to Monaco then through Nice and onto the Camargue. Again no checks at the Italian/French border, though it was staffed this time. Thought I'd visit the Casino in Monaco for a selfie but got a rather rude welcome by one of the Gendarmerie, I had apparently riden along a street leading to the Casino which was not allowed. This despite traffic on the road including other motorcycles. Anyway, best smiley face forward and after a show of license, insurance and registration all was well and I was sent on my way no harm done. Still don't know what I did wrong but hey ho, all part of life's rich tapestry. Anyway the SS1 is a road worth travelling, great coastal cliff scenery and some nice twisties. I then jumped on the A8 motorway westbound to make the Camargue and my next remote hotel there before dark. Temp's plummeted from 16oC in Nice, to 5oC for the last hour or two passing Arles. Once again the heated gear and seat came in handy. Note to self, fuel in this part of France is only dispensed at the pump with a Credit Card, what a rigmarole that is. Anyway after something of a grande faff finally got some juice and on I went. It was a bright clear day but sadly at this time of year, the sun was low and made the ride akin to travelling through a strobe lit room, getting worse heading across the Camargue with the sun, sods law applies, right in my face. Then just to add to the fun the wind got up to a severe gale riding one hand up shielding my eyes from the sun, leaning into a very, very brisk crosswind. Anyway today's challenge over I'm in a beautiful B&B in the middle of nowhere surrounded by open countryside and a herd of white Camargue horses. Was planning on a spot of fresh seafood for dinner but have given that a miss in light of the cold and wind, which won't do my gargantuan girth any harm at all ;-), yes I am a wuss ;-) Plan on making northern Spain tomorrow, the forecast is for warming temps and lots of sun fingers crossed. Top tip, for me at least. I always travel with a small gas burner, gas canister, a concerteening Sea to Summit kettle and folding cup with amples supplies of Assam tea. A warm cuppa or three have already been downed, more to follow. Note to self, put a sachet or two of soup in the bag as well.....Take it easy guys, if you find this informative/entertaining I'll report further as I progress, if not just let me know......:blagblah:beerjug:

Great write up. Cannot beat mile munching in all weathers and on different types of roads. :thumb2

Carry on BigT, I for one am enjoying it and it's a much needed break from the madness in the Bar. Photos would be nice as well. Thanks.:thumb

Enjoying the reports, keep them coming please. And I've also settled on very similar equipment. I use a Warm n Safe heated liner/jacket and their goretex heated gloves. The liner goes inside a Klim Badlands Goretex outer jacket and use their two channel wireless controller. Fantastic kit, body stayed warm and the hands dry despite some heavy rain last time I was over. I've been itching to come back over for a tour but never quite know what restrictions I'll run in to. Seems people are getting burnt out with all the controls and maybe we can start getting on with life.

Great report, with you in spirit and itching to get the Wing out and head South myself, when family commitments permit. Please keep on entertaining us and safe travels

Loved the last 'Wing' and did many a thousand happy mile around the USA and Europe on one, but sadly I found the latest incarnation to be a little too small for me (6'5") and all my luggage, especially when she who must be obeyed deems to travel. And so having loved the GTL but rather disliked one or two problems, 2 x engines, 3 x gearboxes and entire frame replacement in the 1st 18 months from new, I decided to try something else. The 2021 R1250 GS Adventure TE has proven, after a deal of farkling to cope with my height etc, to be a revelation. Hope your commitments allow an early departure south. Don't forget your 'UK' sticker on the number plate as opposed to GB ;-)
