A development project back in 1956 to see how much they could improve fuel consumption...... used a 350cc bullet under the bath tub body monstrosity

Thank god the global technology centre in Leicestershire has taken a different route on the latest bikes

That tail end has a touch of Ariel Leader styling about it.

There were a few dustbin contraptions around, back in the day - the Vincent Black Prince effort wasn't too much of an eyesore, but probably a right handful in a crosswind: -

PS: it seems KAB 573 may still be around, although not OTR - a 1951 Silver RE 350, with a V5 last issued in 2018.

The concept is interesting and is an early example of streamlining so they were on the right track but I wonder how much weight all that bodywork added?

The problem with dustbin designs and the reason they were banned from competition is that they place the centre of pressure ahead of the centre of gravity. You know what happens when you try to throw a dart backwards.... :augie

3 years before the Issigonis Mini changed the face of basic motoring forever. Commuter bikes with dustbin fairings for protection were never going to be the future after that...

Both of them inspired by the Suez crisis of 1956. Most manufacturers tried to squeeze more out of a gallon of petrol as stocks of crude oil dwindled.

:D

Bought this during the week via ebay, looks like it will be an interesting read
