I have an old MacBook Pro circa 2011. My problem is the ‘ ] ‘ key is not working & as this is part of my password I now can’t get open it.
It has all my music & photos on it so I’m stuffed. Before I take it to the local computer repair shop can anyone suggest how I can get around this?
It’s linked to my iPad & iPhone via my Apple ID if that might help.
Thanks in advance

Had this issue before Xmas, you can ring the Apple tech line, they are very helpful at unlocking the laptop. Will ask for serial numbers etc

Use wired usb keyboard? Borrow, steal, buy a cheap one from Argos or Amazon.

Thanks both for your very swift replies. I have a usb keyboard so I’ll try that first. Cheers…

That’s good of you. I hooked up a usb keyboard but it seems either the laptop doesn’t recognise my password or more probably I entered the wrong one. So the problem now is how do access the laptop without a password.?
Wish id never set a bloody password

Bugger! I can’t think of anything else? Other than taking it to your local apple store or computer specialist, try calling apple support before going into the store.

Thanks mate, I’m going to give them a bell later. I’ll report back as it may help others in a similar dilemma.
Cheers…

If you are using a wired keyboard remember that the @ & " will be reversed if these are part of your password.

I had the same problem with my 2016 Mac Book Pro 15. Unfortunately although it was a recognised fault, it was beyond the warranty period. A new keyboard is priced at 700 euro but I did discover that if I sent it back for a replacement battery at 210 euro, Apple replace the whole top plate including the keyboard.

I got it back just before Christmas and it works great.

Interesting to hear others have had similar probs & thanks to all for your advice. I had to use a usb keyboard as the MacBook keyboard is knackered.
Anyway I got through to Apple Support who were v helpful & always have been imho. So once we’d established a decent wifi signal they directed me to turn off the laptop & when turning it back on press the ‘command’ & ‘R’ keys together & hold until the Apple logo or other image appears on screen. This will take you into the ‘utilities’ mode where you click ‘utilities’ on the top bar.
This opens a notepad with some computer lingo written in it. You type in there, ‘resetpassword’ all one word.
It then takes you to a screen that asks for your Apple ID & password which in turn takes you to a screen allowing you to reset your MacBook password.
Sounds simply and is I suppose but with the wifi issue I had initially it took me over an hour to sort but the support was very good and patient.
Hope this helps someone else but for me I’m going to backup this one & start saving up for another

The key mapping for the keyboard will probably NOT be the same as the letters printed on the keys. Especially if it is not a Mac keyboard.
If your password contains some "strange" characters, it might be that you are not typing them in correctly.
Use the external keyboard, but keep in mind that the physical key/character mapping will be the same as the one you have on the Mac's keyboard. EG: use the laptop's keyboard as a reference for which buttons to push on the external keyboard.

Yeah I noticed that. My laptop asked me to identify the keyboard when I plugged it in by first tapping the key to the right of the left side ‘shift’ key. I did this & it identified it as ‘standard European’? I think. But thanks anyway …
