I have oil seeping at the bottom of the timing head cover (Balancing shaft).

Is this just a case of replace the bearing and the small rubber seal or am I going to be spliting the bike in half and doing a far bigger job?

If the later can I get away without using an special BMW tools?

The timing head cover image sadly is not mine, I wish mine was as clean but taken from https://www.r1200gs.info/threads/bmw-r1200gs-front-timing-cover-refurb.52407/

Why do you need to replace the bearing ?

If I recall correctly that is just an O ring in there ?

Yup part 6 O ring 48 x 3

The oil is certainly running out in a constant flow as soon as the cover was removed.

Surely this isn't correct.

have a look around at the oil level sight glass

Its an open bearing if it was sealed it would not run out

The seal is just the O ring there is ZERO pressure there just the swooshing about of oil

I'll take it off again and try and give it a better clean then tighten up the bolts to 8Nm and see if that stops it. Just need the temperature to rise above -3 :D

Buy a new O ring from the BM dealer for all the price of it

Other suppliers are available but for the sake of £5 is it worth it?

Try a trolley jack under the front of the engine just to lift the nose up and decrease the amount of oil around the area

Use brake cleaner to scoosh the mess out

Whatever gets in to the crank case will evaporate and is a VERY small percentage of the oil

Probably a good idea Not to start it right away just in case :aidan

I had the same problem on an 07 GSA, replaced the o ring ,sorted.

My local BMW Motorrad has to order the O ring in - cost £8 inc vat.

Lifting the nose up, great idea and I already have brake cleaner...so hopefully as soon as the O ring arrives I can tackle that.
