Just going to collect this old beauty..anyone here have any knowledge of these Triples, looks like a whole lot of work but i'm really in no hurry. Will probably farm out the engine to a professional to go through it thoroughly.
The rest is just deciding what does not need sorting, very little probably but i really don't want a show queen, i want to keep some sort of originality..ha ha..
So what would you the collective do?? Any suggestions to T160 specialists / parts stockist's etc that you could recommend in this money pit called restoration..
Or get the engine done and stick it in a Rob North frame kit, Slippery Sam rep..
Any info or parts lurking in your sheds gentlemen,
Looking forward to hearing thoughts,
Steve :blast

how much ?
there are many people who think they know how to do the engine . but there is only 1 Richard Peckett ( and Dave ) . Unit 8, Set Star Estate, Transport Ave, Brentford TW8 9HF , 020 8847 1711 .

doesn't do internet , still has frames built , labour rate is pretty cheap £48/hr , bills are big , but the job is done right , there may be a 3-4 month wait to get in.

??? you went from ...original ...to Rob North very quickly .

my neighbour , went X75 to RN . budget started at 12k , it briefly hung around at 18k .....it didn't finish at 25k , he went 750...840...930. did win championships on it .

have a good think , oily rag resto or LOTS AND i mean LOTS or money .

i've asked how much he has spent , he just laughs .

It's all there by the looks of it? Maybe non OEM silcencers? As above, give it a damn good clean and polish before you decide. I'd be tempted to go for an oily rag resto. The engine however will need a strip and rebuild and a good look at the wiring for decay, mice damage etc.

Enjoy!

Thanks so far all..yes getting a bit carried away with Rob North etc, as Pete says probably an oily rag resto, hopefully get on and give it a good clean tomorrow and see where we are.
The engine does turn over and selects all gears and the wiring looked ok. The big issue was it was packed away in a vac bag many years ago, this had been split open some years since and condensation had its wicked way..
Inside the tank is pretty clean but the rest is rough. So i collect it this evening and on with cleaning tomorrow if the rain stops, or just leave it outside in the rain all day!!
Will post more pics as we go, Thanks all, keep any info coming in.
Steve.

Steve.

If the engine turns over .... I'd be very tempted to change the oil and filter, stick in new plugs and give it a try! :D

That looks a great find.

Get it cleaned, change the oils and battery and see if she runs. If the mileage is correct then it looks like a good low mileage find.

Keep original, and “oily rag” restoration would be the less costly way to go. Otherwise it will end up costing a fortune.

Pics of when cleaned would be great

Quick update, not much done today as grim out in the rain, need to wash it off properly before dissection, but all appears original including footrests and black silencer end caps, only part not is the Cibie headlight which is a small bonus amongst the corrosion. Mudguards are all good, nominal corrosion on frame and swing arm, few scotch loc connectors under the seat.
Loose plan is to get her loosely running first, carbs off and cleaned, battery and electrics checkover, fresh oil etc..
Will post pics after initial de-grime ,
I still can’t get over how they shoe horned this engine, carbs and elec start into its frame, it’s gonna be interesting

I would advise joining the Trident and Rocket 3 Owners Club. There is a wealth of knowledge available and members are very happy to help either physically or via facebook (private for members only) or else Triplesonline which has been running for years and has an excellent forum.

Best of luck. Good find. My Triumph Triple is called the Mistress because it take so much time and love and money.

Still looking around it this evening with a cuppa tea, just need a clear day and a bucket of suds and make a start..
Joined the Tr3oc as I will need a good resource of information and looking forward to getting stuck in and realising restoration products and finishes have come a long way. I’m even looking at Ultra sonic cleaners ffs, plenty of parts suppliers, lots of pattern parts, the skys your budget!! I want to make sure if possible to use all I can of the original machine, nice running and riding over finish..
Will keep you updated

Once you go beyond an oily rag resto it will be difficult to stop! And the cost is gonna head north quickly. I’d do the basics: engine check- compression, valve clearances etc, sort the wiring, clean the carbs and the tank, replace all rubber lines, full brake strip and rebuild then pause and check my bank balance before going much further..
