Does anyone here have any first hand knowledge of an electric start conversion for the MK 2A I've had my bike for 30 + years and its not getting easier to start as I get older , its a lovely bike and I want to keep riding it now I'm a pensioner
I know what's out there but I need to know which one works before I spend around £2000 .. the original on the Mk 3 was not very good and I don't want to fund someone's half arsed attempt to supply same for the Mk2
Norvil are about to launch a new design around May this year

Ian

Hello Ian,

I can't offer any advice regarding your Norton 850, however I did have an Alton electric start fitted to a Velocette Venom that I once owned, the bike was always difficult to start and the Alton did make life a bit easier... I'm struggling to remember how much the installation cost me but think it was done by a specialist in Scotland

Hope that helps in some way

Before any cock waving ! Wow a lovely bike but its sadly its not a Norton twin so not a bit of use to me a polite note this a "Norton "only related query I know you all have lots of lovely bikes that you all like to show off but please not here anything other than Norton 750 /850 is no help thank you all

H Tanak,
Why not give Alton a quick call?
They may be in France but they speak excellent English, and are very helpful.
Their kit is usually very well thought out, and seems to work well

To clarify, I have received a PM from ianak, in which he confirms that his enquiry was Norton related...I was aware that Alton also offered a product for Norton products

The purpose of my post was to try and help, not wave my cock or to show off the Velocette I once owned, but only to show the Alton starter that was fitted to the Velocette. Anyway enough said eh :nenau

No doubt Ian will make further Norton 'specific' enquiries....... his choice.

If you ask any vendor about their product they will all tell you its the best money can buy Having just retired after 40 years in engineering I know its better to ask the customers and service engineers who own and use a product what they think rather that the company that make and sell it

I would have a talk with Norvil, see what they say

Nothing lost apart from a few minutes

why not lower the compression ? i doubt if you would miss the HP.

That’s quite a complicated procedure compared to buying an off the shelf electric start and it still might not be enough.

I’ve got exactly the same bike as Ian and it’s sitting idle in my workshop simply because it needs an electric start (actually my ankle needs it, not the bike) and I’ve yet to put my mind to fitting one.

Ian sent me a pm about electric start conversions and from what he said the Norvil one sounds interesting because it’s expected to be about the same price as the Alton one but include a belt drive conversion. They’ve told him it’ll probably be available in May so I’m hoping he buys one and it’s a good kit :thumb2

Talk to Gordon at Spike Island, Chandlers Ford. Not only does he sell them, but he knows a lot about Norton twins.
