Last November, I chanced across this hotel in a very small village near Trois-Ponts in the Belgian Ardennes. Thinking that it looked quite nice, I simply took a picture of it and made a note to give it a try at some later date. That later date was last weekend.

I / we were not disappointed.

What made it good:

A. It’s run by a very nice, very friendly, lady, ably assisted by several younger staff.

B. The rooms are all well kept, clean, with decent enough wi-fi for emails and a phone call.

C. The restaurant has a good enough choice of two a la carte menus in the evening.

D. It has a free garage but we didn’t use it.

E. It’s well situated for that part of Belgium, if you get my drift.

F. We were the only English guests for our two nights, the hotel I guess being 2/3 full over the Friday and Saturday nights over the Easter just gone.

G. It had a bunch of pleasant enough other guests, ranging from a pretty ‘professional’ team of say eight bicyclists, through to regular mid-40’s couples / small family holiday get-togethers, and some obviously using it as a base to go hiking. We were the only English and the only three on motorbikes.

Who won’t it suit?

1. It’s in a small village, so it’s definitely not teaming with night life. It doesn’t even have another restaurant or bar. Miss the hotel and you miss Wanne.

2. It doesn’t have a huge bar, catering for bikermates chucking Eurofizz down their necks.

3. The menu choice is ‘regional’, so if you are looking for egg and chips, pizza or a pie with gravy, you’ll be disappointed. It is also in French, as that is what they speak and, more importantly, it’s the language of most of their clientele. That does not make it pretentious, as the menu in Weatherspoons in Gloucester is in English and would doubtless be just as confusing to Karl from Stuttgart.

4. Anyone who thinks that everyone MUST speak English, all the time.

5. Anyone who thinks their motorcycle will be stolen if it is not bolted to the ground in Fort Knox or out of line of sight for more than a minute.

For those that like that sort of stuff, Wanne marks part of the furthest extent westwards covered by SS Army Group Peiper in the failed Ardenne offensive of December 1944.

The chateau in Wanne, the large building on the left of this picture, was the temporary HQ of the Leibstandarte division.

A slightly breathless website, does provide some background.
