Anyone with any experience of having a professional bike fit?
Was it worth it? Why did you have it done?

I’ve been getting quite bad neck and shoulder pain and friends have suggested having a bike fit. I have played around with saddle height, position, stem length etc but no joy through experimenting.

Yes had them done a couple of times.

First time at the bike shop that supplied my Cyfac frame (and did the full build) and second time at a place round the corner that specialises in Sports Physio - they’re big into triathlon and had all the kit for doing proper dynamic measurement of your pedal action etc.

Made a massive difference to both my comfort and efficiency on the bike and helped me to do the bigger Sportive’s (Marmotte, Etape du Tour etc.) without injury and not too much pain (apart from my legs hurting like feck:D) Not as cheap as trying to do it yourself, but if you get a good person who really knows what they are doing the benefits can be huge.

Cheers.
We’ve got a local chap Adrian Timmis - ex Tour de France finisher and Olympian who set up doing them. 120 of your finest and about 2-3 hours to do. Will give him a ring. Just didn’t want to waste £120!

I had a bike fit, well worth it. And several of my my cycling mates say the same. Aside from the comfort, new knees are much more expensive than a bike fit.

Lad I ride with has a bike fit every two years since as he ages ( late 60’s) he loses flexibility. He describes a pro bike fit as like having an extra gear.

Ive had two bike fits, the last 9 months ago. Aside from reach and correct angle of knee pedal etc this guy used a pressure pad on the seat.

The pressure pad is like a flat airhawk that contains about 30/50 pressure sensors. As soon as I started riding it started populating a screen with green amber and red points.

First clear point was my preference to use my left leg , second was an overall amber / red pressure around my sit bones. He then dropped my seat post by about 6mm and the reds changed to amber , amber to green.

I have always been a believer too low a seat is bad and as long as your hips are not rocking , then higher is best. The bike fitter poo pooed this point out saddle soreness will lead to fatigue and you will not deploy your glutes to support your thighs and calves.

So in summary without a good bike fit I would never have made the small changes to reflect my physique.

Its £120 investment in yourself and your performance, money well spent.

AdrianS....

If you actually decide to go ahead with this would you please pop back and let us know your thoughts? I've never had a bike fit but have hummed/hahhhed in my time. I'm an old dog who's quite happy to learn new tricks.

Thank you.

It's not just for your current bike - once you have had a bike set up properly you can transfer the dinensions to a new bike, or the one you hire in Valencia, or whatever.
