I had a v50 in the early 90’s and when this one appeared just 10 miles away recently I couldn’t resist.

It’s had 3 previous owners the last one had the bike since 1989 and it came with every MOT and tax disk plus some really nice original service manuals, parts invoices and documents. It’s a credit to the previous owners that all the records have been kept.

It appears to be completely original with the exception of the mirrors which are missing.

I’m going to give it a deep clean and a full service and keep it original.

I think that means it was manufactured in week 32 of of 1982.

It’s an Avon Roadrunner.

Plenty of life left in it yet

The V50 has such an elegant shape to the tank.

I agree! I like the flow of the exhausts too. The overall design just seems ‘right’. The 850 T Is the same. Clever bloke that Lino Tonti.

Lovely, I'll be following this. let us also know how you achieved the finish.

The carb cleaning fluid I’m using in the ultrasonic cleaner leaves a very dull finish - I might not have diluted it enough.

So I polished the body, slide and the needle with Autosol. That took a couple of hours.

Then a quick squirt of carb cleaner and compressed air to make sure everything was clean and all the jets and passages were clear before reassembly.

When I refitted the carb, the bike ran rough and wouldn’t tick over. So I removed the carb again, stripped it and everything looked OK. I put it back on the bike and it was still bad.

The bike would only run on choke or with throttle. There was also loads of chuff coming out of the righthand exhaust and the righthand plug was fouling. So it was obviously too rich. But I couldn’t understand what I’d done wrong.

I went back to it the next morning and realised I’d put the slide in back to front which meant there was a gap on the engine side of the slide allowing additional fuel in on a closed throttle.

All part of the learning experience!

When I was 17 I rebuilt the top end of my Suzuki X5 and on rebuild it would not run well. It took a while before I realised I'd simply swapped the carb tops (Complete with slides, needle, throttle cables) from one side to the other. Silly mistake but you don't do it twice!
