A friend of mine came to visit me whilst we were staying in Bakewell, he fetched a couple of Brough Superior motor cycles he owns, the star being the 1929 bike that was first owned by Sheffield City police from new, this bike at that time held various speed records and has open side valves.
Value £250.000.
TE Lawrence (of Arabia) was killed whilst riding such a motorcycle in 1932.

but did he let you ride it ?

a friend had a 1932 , had it for 15 years , i pestered , he relented on the day he was selling , 90mph down the Michelham bypass, 0730 in the morning , made my day.

Errrm . . . "Open Side Valves" . .:nenau.

That's an SS80 - with a side valve JAP motor. The SS100 had the overhead valve motor as shown in the 'Lawrence' photo.

Still a lovely bike though :thumb.

Bob.

The Lawrence link is legendary of course. As is Lawrence's description of his race with a Bristol fighter when he was based at Cranwell.

Here's the actual event in Lawrence's own words ... https://thevintagent.com/2017/09/04/t-e-lawrence-the-road/

There's no finer summation of the joys of motorcycling than those first sentences ...

The extravagance in which my surplus emotion expressed itself lay on the road. So long as roads were tarred blue and straight; not hedged; and empty and dry, so long I was rich.
