Hi I am going round the bend trying to work out what oil to use when I do the final drive and gearbox oil. I have been searching quite a bit. ;)

Apparently BMW recommend some Castrol SAF-XO stuff that doesn't seem to exist and when I find its replacement it says its GL4 not GL5 and there are dire warnings about using GL4!

Will this do, will arrive tomorrow from Amazon and has German writing on the bottle. :)

Liqui Moly 1414 Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (Gl 5) Sae 75W-90 1L - Black

https://amzn.eu/d/47kESu3

Also I can also get 75w/140 that some say is better and what the guy uses on the writeup on here is there any benefit to getting that ( its dearer on Amazon).

I 'll have a look at what i used when i get home ,

If I've still got it, your welcome to have it, you only need 180ml if i recall

if you location is correct, i might be able to deliver it too ;)

Morris oils Fully Synthetic GL5 Ledoxoil 75-90 .
Used for 25K miles on 2006 vintage model no final drive issues or excess play etc.
;)
Used in the gearbox also .Email Morris oils they will confirm.

People can be extremely ANAL about Oils :blast :blast :green gri

Anything GL5 will do your gearbox and Final Drive

My preference from servicing BMs for 15 odd years is Heavy Goop in the FD!

(ESPECIALLY if it is a 1200 Hex-head!) SO 75W140 85W130 90W140 GL5 all good in my book

Main gearbox I normally use 75W90 GL5 Fully synth

Ive got the remains of the bottle i used to do my hexhead drive

about 400ml of syntrax longlife 75W 90 GL5

suitable for BMW non LSD axles

more than welcome to it if you want to meet up over the weekend

Hexhead long gone .. so of no use

You could just pop to a dealer and buy direct if you're concerned, the BMW branded 75w90 (FD & Gearbox) is no more expensive than any decent other brand.

75w90 GL5 for both interesting comments about going heavier in the final drive

Yamalube rear axle oil 80W-90 GL-5 would be fine

Or call Motorworks for a recommended alternative?

As for Castrol Syntrax 75w/140 I only ever used that in my gearbox it seemed to make the gear shifts less clunky

That could be handy where abouts are you? I am thinking of just getting that stuff off of Amazon now though as its GL5.

Go to a Store and Look at a label!!

£10 over internet V actually actually having the product in your hand to read the label

Remember It's a £400 Final Drive rebuild if you cut corners

or a £????? Replacement / Rebuild of Gearbox!

75w90 GL5 for both interesting comments about going heavier in the final drive

Think about it where is the power ALWAYS focussed through ??

More viscous hangs about better and if anyone is daft enough to think a little bit thicker oil (All 180~200ml of it!) is going to affect performance or mpg They need a Gibbs slap!!!

Just go to your local motor factors.
75w90 was on the shelf when I visited my small rural factors today - to collect the 20w50 that they ordered in within 24hours. F*ck Amazon!

This is what I use in the gear box and final drive. 180ml in the FD not 200ml.

Hi is it worth getting the liqui Moly additive as well to go in?

Liqui Moly 1040 Gearbox Oil Additive 20 g https://amzn.eu/d/g6aOM7a

NOt IN gearbox !!

The oil is flung up to lubricate the other gears Making it thicker is not a real benefit !

The FD is "oil bathed" so using the heavier 140W GL5 oil is a benefit and the additive not needed

Just to throw something else into the mix - a mate of mine is a metallurgist and uses teflon additive in the gearbox and final drive of his twin cam R1200RT from new, now on 170,000 miles with no issues. When he worked in the mining industry, the wear on gears and bearings in some machinery was dramatically reduced.

This is the stuff he now uses on the bikes:
