Guys, Although my manuals should cover this bike for some reason they don’t, I’ve tried Mr utube but no help, however I’m pretty sure I’ll receive the correct info from one of you nice chaps?

I want to check out the head races on my 1994 R80r as the steering feels slightly tight.

When I look at the top yoke I imagine that the 19mm nut in the centre is the protruding yoke stem, however I’m just wondering if it is a locking nut for the larger 30mm nut, as the 30mm nut doesn’t appear to have anything to lock it in position once the bearing Clearence has been set.

I don’t want to start swinging on any big spanners before I know for sure.

Any advice from the learned collective would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't say I'm learned but I'm pretty sure that's identical to the set up used on the 1991> gs - one of which I just happen to have apart in front of me...
The larger 30mm nut is the locknut and clamps onto the top yoke
Despite appearances the smaller 19mm 'nut' is not the top of the stem - it is a seperate item, about 1" long, with an external thread that fits into the internal thread of the knurled ring you can see under the top yoke.
This ring is actually an inverted tophat - the races sit underneath it, the top yoke slides onto the top of it and the 19mm 'nut' then screws into it.
The 30mm clamps down onto the whole lot. Hope that makes sense?
I'm sure there must be a good reason why BMW changed from the earlier simpler system - but I've no idea what it is...

Thanks Vulpine,

Think I’ve got that,

So the first nut to crack is the larger 30mm nut then the top yoke should lift straight off…if it’s not seized?

However the spindle and bearing assembly will stay intact without the top yoke until I loosen the inverted top hat?

I’ll give that a go this morning.

Cheers!
