I have a BMW extended warranty on my 2019 1250GSA and I’m considering using an Independent for my 12K service.

I have no qualms at all about the Independent, who has a stellar local reputation, will do a more thorough job, is less expensive, and is used by Rybrook BMW for their servicing overflow.

My question is: what is the likelihood of having a future warranty claim wriggled out of due to not using an official BMW main dealer?

Unless things have changed recently, using a franchised agent for servicing was a condition under the extended warranty, but not under the original warranty.

My 'approved used' 1250 GSA has 6 months remaining on its original factory warranty then the dealer adds another 18 months cover, so I am getting mine serviced by them at least until their cover expires. I may pay to extend the dealer warranty later.

Looking at the cost of components alone, let alone labour and VAT on top, an out-of-warranty repair can be eye-wateringly expensive on these bikes.

When I ran a Hexhead the servicing was easy and the parts were affordable (especially from motorworks etc.) Thats not the case with my newer bike.

Nope, asked this very question to them last week. The bike has to be serviced as per the manufacturers schedule and it can be done at any VAT registered garage

You may be able to use an independent as long as you use OEM BMW parts and make sure you keep the receipts as proof.

You "may"; however, as I've said on previous occasions, Block Exemption only ever applied to cars and trucks. Post Brexshit, who knows...?

I phoned them and asked, what more proof do you need? Of course an independent will not be able to do any warranty work.

Thanks for your pointers guys. After a little more research in a warranty document the difference in wording suggests that Independent servicing should not affect warranty claims.

One thing to note though is an independent will not have access to any software updates and any recalls, technical or otherwise that the dealer will have.

Not sure this is entirely true regarding software up dates

My local independent mechanics ( shameless plug for Doncaster motorcycles) pay a great deal of money for their diagnostic thing and it does do software updates but and here is the but they dont become available to independents for a fair while after they were available to main dealers

Kev the partner at DMC has a KTM 1290 and was telling me just the other day that it is usually 3 to 6 months on from KTM doing a software upgrade to him being able to do it himself which is actually usually ok as a software update rarely is life or death

IDK about recalls but they should be done by the dealer/manufacturer regardless

Guess it depends on what kit the independent has. I know of a couple of BMW independents that do not have the kit to carry out software updates. Recalls I agree if it is a safety recall, but not sure if that is true on a technical update jobber. But I personally would have no issues using an independent if they were better value than a dealer, if there wasn't much in it, then unless the dealer was crap i would use them.

I get asked this question all the time when I decline to buy a car with non main dealer history.. buyers still want the reassurance ( rightly or wrongly ) of a full main dealer history.
One other thing that a full main dealer history helps with is “goodwill claims”.. if a dealer has a relationship with you and your bike, they can approach manufacture for support .. this may be free parts and only pay labour ... or sometimes both.
Just a thought.

The VAT thing is a total myth.

Well best you give BMW insured warranty a call and tell them then.

its not in the policy document anywhere, could you please post the document for us all to see.

No I can't, I phoned them to ask, and that is what the good lady told me. So why not just phone them and ask them yourself if you are that bothered. I don't know any non VAT registered specialists and won't be doing the work myself, so it doesn't bother me.

I don't need to, I have read the policy and it says nothing of the sort.
