Side saddle

A friend of mine recently bought a Meteor. He wondered why it had only had 1 side pannier and couldn't get one for the other side apart from canvas or throw over bags.
A mate of his who lives in Dubai asked some of his Indian friends there and they told him it was because in India, the women pillions ride side saddle.
Logically could be true if wearing a sari, or is there another reason?

Could be, but I don’t think one is even offered for the other side as an accessory.

It’s the same across the entire Indian sub continent and a lot of the time they’re carrying a baby in their arms while they sit sidesaddle on the back. Want more? There’s more often than not another small child sitting in front of dad while he rides the bike.
