Retro's Royal Enfield ... a farkle diary

I could go to bed at night with the garage open, light on and keys in the bikes, they would still be there in the morning I've read a lot on here over the years about nicked bikes and needing fort knox security measures on garages etc..... I couldn't live anywhere where I needed to have a ground anchor in my garage

Not updated this thread for a while and the RE is now complete (... er, I think).

A few jobs visible here:

- ZUMO now wired in, thanks to Mickey for leaving a live feed spur in the headlight :thumby:;
- INNOV camera mounted on the offside screen mount and powered from the same feed;
- HITCHCORKS short screen fitted which has eased the buffeting somewhat. Some owners cut their screens down with a hacksaw, but I wasn't happy to do that. Incidentally this bike rides best without any screen at all, but I feel the clocks & electrics do need some protection from the rain.

I mounted the INNOV hard drive under the rear pillion seat. Tool kit now carried in one of the front LOMO bags.

Finally, this chain oiler. A bit of a pain to position the delivery tube as there was a rough welded seam on the swing arm, right where the carrier needed to be positioned. So I used a DREMEL to smooth the weld then painted the bare metal with Hammerite to protect it.

I've dispensed with the side pannier carriers (doubt if I'll ever need them) to mount the oiler on the footrest hanger bracket.

That should be it for now. I had hoped to get a tank ring for my excellent SW-Motech tank bag that I use on my R1150GS. However SW-M do not produce a tank ring for RE bikes :blast and there are no plans to introduce one anytime soon, which seems daft IMHO:confused:

Before I carried out these mods, I took the bike up into my usual haunts around the Brecon Beacons. What an outstanding bike this is for these roads:thumby:

Nice one Dave :thumby:

You can take the swing arm stickers off now :thumb2

Nice. Interesting that the Hitchcocks short screen leaves quite a gap above the headlamp, which I think is probably a good thing to allow some airflow. Being a penny pincher I've adapted a universal fly screen to help the buffeting, but as you say, no screen at all is best. Here's mine..

The genuine Enfield flyscreen also leaves such a gap, as you say a good thing to balance air flow.
I tried filling the gap with self adhesive rubber draught excluder, which slightly increased wind noise over the screen.

The screen on mine does not cause me any problems. Maybe that's my height: my head is well above the top of the screen. The down side of that is on my second attempt to get that seat right!

The screen is a big issue for many riders. I'm still getting a bit of buffeting off the shorty screen, but not nearly as bad as the OE.

Best option for a rider of my hieght (5'10") is no screen at all, but as stated I do have concerns about water-v-the electrics.

... talking of which, the Himmy Facebook page is full of tales of woe about the fragile original relays (my 2018 E4 bike has two; E5 bikes need 4). Rather than risk being caught out I've obtained x2 upgraded relays from Hitchcocks, which I will carry around with me until I can be bothered to swap them out. This means that the original relays will probably never cause me any bother whatsoever:blast

Also fitted a GIVI tank ring and acquired a 15L tank bag, plus a sidestand foot extender, also from Hitchcocks. As any RE Himmy owner will tell you, the original stand needs careful positioning on anything other than totally flat and level ground .....

I was hoping to update this thread with a ride report, the intention being to take the Himmy up to the Lleyn Peninsula (North Wales) for a few days of exploration. However the weather was truly dreadful in my time window :blast so I decided not to bother.

I'll try again in September:thumb2

Ha, it took me 4 attempts to get the seat right for me! Original, then SAS autotrim remover/reprofile, next a RE Touring seat, finally Seat Concepts 2" taller seat - YMMV as the 'mericans say!

I'm in DIY mode with foam, vinyl and staple gun. By the time I'm finished that seat pan will have more serrations than a roll of toilet paper!

Still loving the Scram version and still tour on it when feel like a break off the bigger bikes.
