Hi gang,

1978 R100

Bike started fine this morning and went off on the road.

Pulled over and put it into neutral. No neutral light.

Now the bike won't start, even with the clutch pulled in.

Any pointers before I call my local mechanic?

Are you saying your bike shutdown electrically whilst riding ??
any lights come on the instrument panel on ignition??
do yer lights/brakelights work ??
Is yer battery fully charged or at least more than 11v

Check the neutral switch below the gearbox. Are both connections secure? Check the wiring to the switch. Check the operation of the micro switch in the clutch lever housing and the wiring to it.

I’ll make an assumption that it’s not turning over,
You may have multiple faults,
The clutch switch might not have worked for a while but you didn’t know.
Neutral switch may have failed.
My first check would be the main relay.
It gets its earth through the neutral switch and the clutch switch,as pointed out above, there is a diode on the fuse board.
It’s on the LHS under the brake master cylinder..
Chances are the master cylinder is leaking and the relay and wiring is corroded to buggery.
If the bike is a long term keeper,it might pay you to consider a new wiring loom now whilst they are still available ,
Once they start getting a bit iffy you’ll be chasing issues.

Thanks guys

So, I followed the wiring upstream and found that the neutral switch connects to another harness near the battery.

I disconnected it and then attached a jumper wire from the male connector to the frame to earth it.

Neutral light comes on.

That proves to me the neutral switch is faulty, not the bulb.

So... I'm thinking I just wire the neutral switch out. Has anyone done it? Any pointers (I'm not great with electrics!)

Why dont you just replace the switch?

Remove 2 wires, unscrew switch, chuck in bin, screw new switch in, replace 2 wires.

Bingo. Neutral light works. Cost about £15.

Prop up rear of gearbox, take out engine through bolt, lever out spacer bar….. giving room to get to neutral switch.
Replace neutral switch. Add wiring to switch
Place spacer bar in freezer to make it easier to replace. Fit through engine bolt.

Watch you tube to see above.
It can be done, even by a non mechanic.

Thanks, I've tried having a look on YouTube and can't see a video...do you have a link?
