No. Not unless you tell it you need a detour.

No. Not unless you tell it you need a detour.

Probably depends where the detour is since it’s a sequential list of waypoints, so it will always hunt the next waypoint

On my zumo 660 you had to press the detour button to tell it the road was closed. Then it would re calculate.

The answer is yes and no.

1. It depends on how you have your device set-up. Recalculation on, off or prompted. They can all act slightly (or very) differently.

2. It depends on how you or indeed the device (if you lazily said, “Take me from A to B Mr Nav VI, twisty roads, not motorways”) have created your route. For example, if you have a via or waypoint (ie point(s) you must go through) inside the portion of closed road, the device will keep trying to take you through it. That is where the ‘skip waypoint’ tool comes in. But skip waypoint tool can work in different ways, too.

3. Get to know the detour button. It’s workings are explained in the owner’s handbook. That though can deal with decisions in two different ways, too.

The best way to get to know it is to ride down a road you know and pretend there is a road block…. Then see how the device works the detour.

All that being said, the way I prefer to do it is have recalculation turned off, then follow any deviation signs and / or navigate myself back onto the route, using the device’s screen as a simple map only.

In short, play around. You can’t break it.

PS If you create your routes in say MyRoute or Google maps, you may well find the route creation algorithm will route you around roads that it knows are closed. Though of course that relies on the maps knowing a road is closed. There is then the Garmin app thing (I forget its name) which I think can pick up data from somewhere. I don’t use it as I find things like that more plague than profit.

Thanks all for the info.

I'll probably get slated for this but i couldn't be arsed planning a route so i purchased a bespoke one from Simon Weir which are obviously GPX files, he does provide maps too.

The reason for the question was a few years back (first European bike tour using a sat nav )i came across a road closure in France and the nav constantly wanted to take me back,i ended up ignoring the GPX file and putting the address of the hotel in and going the fastest way.

Don’t apologise for getting routes from anywhere. You only need to look at the Travel section of UKGSer (and at the number of specialist touring magazines in Germany) to see that it’s a popular enough request.

I think a lot of your problem then was down to nothing more than user error or the way the route was created in the first place. For example, if Simon Weir’s route had a load of fixed via or waypoints (points you must go through) it it, then all sorts of things might happen.

Get familiar with your device, it really is very powerful and (simultaneously) pretty dumb.
