Hi, planning a few days in the lake district in summer 2023 and looking for some accommodation suggestions, biker friendly with secure (ish) parking away from undesirable eye's.

It doesn't matter if its B&B, pub or hotel or if even if its just outside the lakes itself e.g. Penrith or Sedbergh or even west coast.

It will be last minute so i'm expecting to have to ring round with a list in hand.

Many thanks

I stayed at Ambleside manor years ago it’s an old house but was ok off-roader parking ,gravel drive 5 mins form Ambleside town centre or short bus ride to Windermere, don’t know what’s it like now but was okay as I remember .

I live less than an hour form the main areas of the Lake District. In summer it will be busy esp areas like Windermere Bowness etc. I find the northern area ,Keswick, Derwent water to be a little more quieter, not as commercialised and therefore more traffic free. The whole area in the summer is beautiful , you will find super places and villages like Cartmel etc to visit and wander. I would stay just outside the lakes if I f was you so you can travel up and through them. Kendal is a lovely town, It also has the benefit of not being far from The works dales ,which are also a must visit place. Due to being close to the area I have not stopped over on my Bike, but I do know people who highly recommend the Glen Guest House in Kendal. Nice secure car park and close enough for a wander round the town at night. Have a great trip

Don’t forget Cumbria has a coast too. Some of the coastal towns are a bit shabby having lost their industries but the coast is generally hugely underrated. Too close for me to stay over but I would be looking at Ravenglass, Allonby, Silloth, Bowness on Solway for places to stay. Whitehaven probably the best of the bigger coastal towns. Piel island well worth a visit and a stay - camp or B&B.

Thanks to all for the replies. I'll add Ambleside Manor and the Glen to the list, both of these fit the bill. I'd reached the same conclusion about staying just outside as the drive in isn't a problem and the west coast is also an option so i'll widen the search.

Have a look at Alston - not too far from Penrith and the lakes, and if going to the lakes then starting and finishing the day with a run up and down the hartside pass should put a smile on your face! Its a small market town so personally I don’t worry about the secure parking side of things.

A similar yup to all this as well :beerjug:
Especially Piel Island one of my two fave places in Cumbria!
(bike security not great but if you particularly wanted to stay on it overnight then you could leave bike with me and I'll take you and pick you up whenever, only 8 miles from me)

Here's Martin Clune's take on it, it's the first island featured

I'd register with the two links below, they often have very good deals on. We've used them both a few times for nights away despite being only an hour or so drive.

I'd recommend The Kellbank in Gosforth on the western side of the Lakes. It's close to Wastwater and the Hardknott and Wrynose passes. It's been renovated during the pandemic, so the rooms are much nicer now (it was OK before, but dated) and the food is excellent :thumb2 It can be very cheap midweek with a last minute booking. There are also a few other pubs and restaurants in the village.

Thanks guys, any of those will work. The plan is a ride through the dales and then onto the lakes, then on the way back a loop via the Pennines.

I would have recommended the Highgate in the centre of Kendal because it had secure parking and the sisters who ran it were hilarious if you got them drinking but you risked getting a late breakfast if things went badly.

Why won’t I recommend it now? Apparently it’s been turn into a recovery hostel of some description which is kind of apt when you consider the volume of wine those two put away :blast

We’ve used Youth Hostels in The Lakes and other places, they’re very helpful and are clean and well kept. I’m referring to a fairly large group of us (8,10 sometimes more), so might not suit an individual but they’ve been easily good enough for our crew who basically just need somewhere to sleep when we’re pissed.

Thanks for that, looks a great location. I see he's on facebook so i've got his number. I'll make a note as i'd quite fancy spending a weeks holiday staying there.
