So my bike is in with my mechanic and it turns out the alternator is foo bar, it is cracked and totally seized, beyond repair.

unfortunately, motor works do not seem to have any alternators so I am looking at. BMW and £790!!!

Does anyone know of any suppliers of decent recon alternators for a 2008 R1200 GSA? Otherwise the bill is going ti be 4 figures

Any help appreciated

Which alternator do you have fitted ? A Bosch or nippon denso, 2008 is the change over year, it could have either one fitted

It's the Denso one. I guess the Bosch is higher quality!

The main problem is the aluminium casing cracks quite significantly, which makes it oval and consequently the rotor catches the stator causing it to sieze.
Getting decent casings to overhaul the alternator is the main problem.

Alternator Sourcing option

Not wanting to have to buy an Alternator at short notice and sell a Kidney to pay for it I looked in the USA and bought a Bosch from a 1200 RT
I took advantage of make an offer and paid $45 and around the same for postage and duty its come from Arizona so never seen salted roads or bad weather and looks and feels like new purchased on the 8/2/2023 and here today 21/2/2023 all in £66 the bearings are smooth so a check of the brushes and pop on the shelf for later
If you do your own servicing as I do, this is less than an hour labour cost at a dealer @ £95 an hour

When my 2008 GSA cracked its alternator, it managed to un-seize itself but I replaced it anyway (Denso) with one from the States (Arizona/Nevada IIRC) for about £70.

When mine gave up it had no corrosion at all. I couldn’t find a used one and didn’t particularly want a used one to fail so I bit the bullet. The guy from Cotswold gave UKgser discount and it was £630 delivered.

. I’ve replaced three alternators over the last two weeks - two of them had alternator mounting bolts snap off. 1 on one bike, 2 on another bike. Welcome to a world of pain and hours of grief trying to drill out the studs stuck in the top of the engine……. I also bought every used 1200 alternator currently available as investments :D

I’ve changed one and I couldn’t believe how much corrosion takes place where they are mounted, regarding broken studs isn’t there a vibrating tool that is used for unfastening glow plugs so they don’t snap off in cylinder heads, wonder if anything like this could be adapted, for stud removal?

Another two seized alternators. An ADV alternator on the right, standard GS on the left.

Second seized alternator this week. One is a 2006 GS, todays is a 2011 GS 😳

So is the Bosch or Denso fitted to the later Hexhead ? (My bike is a 2012.)
Are they interchangeable ?

Two alternators sourced, one from America arrived within 3 days, and no duty to pay as it only cost £65, and like brand new 👍

You done well to get one for £65; the good Lord shines on the righteous after all

Interestingly, the same alternator is fitted to the RNINET range, which just goes to show how much faith the OEM have in Denso… :nenau

They are available remanufactured at a fraction of the OEM price. Just do your research.IMG_0500.png
