Morjens!

94500 kilometers now. Today I make compression test in my bike, poor 7.5-8 bar. Then I make leak by pass test and seems, that valves are damaged. Whistle exhaust and intake.

Two options. Try to find new old engine, or fix current engine. Or is this end my xChallenge?

If I repair current engine, do you know, is parts available only original BMW, or can I buy some "universal Rotax parts"?

Thanks!

Hi Ike -

If Finland is like the UK, Xcs will command a decent price so unless the rest of the bike also needs a big overhaul it's probably worth sorting out.

I would check what other applications the engine was used in. I am pretty sure that it was used in the Aprilia Pegaso, and also some mirolights??? The same part, sourced from a different manufactured (such as Aprilia), can be quite a different price.

Why not strip it and let an auto engineer advise on its condition. I'd have thought valves, rings etc would be quite affordable, but if it needs a re-bore you'd need to check that the barrel material isn't something like Nikasil which can make a rebore harder / impossible.

Let us know how you get on.

For the avoidance of going down a blind alley. The Pegaso was fitted with the Rotax engine but that was fitted with Aprilia's own 5 valve head.

I believe it's possible to fit the F650GS engine even though the boss to mount the rear shock which is located on the inlet manifold is in a different position.

I had several discussions about this when I was considering fitting the ex Boorman Dakar Rally engine I had into my X-Country. There was a woman in S America
who assured me her X-Country had been fitted with the F650 engine but I couldn't get any details of what had been done to fit it.

In the first instance, I'd investigate what is needed to rebuild the engine.

I've got some used and new boxed g650x engines. Message me if you decide to go this route and are interested.

I bent valves on one a while back and cost of parts alone soon built up.

Could split a working engine for the top end if that's easier for you.

All are in Wales, UK

Okay. I think, I cant sent you private message, becouse I have not full acces. Please mail ike.patokoski@gmail.com

Today I spent 4 hours in carage, and discharge my Xchallenge. Tomorrow I finally take head off. Lets see, what´s problem.... These cases are never easy to solve... Bike is driven very hard conditions 60 thousand miles and condition is awfull. Used on winter, adventures in Russia, Morocco and Finnish forests etc, and one winter it dived in lake. Question is, how much money is worth to spent on this bike?

Okay.

Almost seven hours, and cylinder head is on table. My friend check head and says, that valve guides are worn.

Problem is, that BMW sells only intake valves. Outline valves are not available and valve guides and rubbers has even spare code.

So... Voi vittu, että alkaa vituttaan koko homma!!!

Anything ideas, where I can buy spares?

Thanks, Ike

Obtain a good 2nd hand engine or new, depends on howxmuch you like the bike, or break that bike for spares and buy a new one.

Not bad idea...

My bike includes full adjustable Öhlins, Adjustable front forks, Touratech tank/ fairing kit, very good fast lockin pannier tracks, excel front wheel, touratech rear pannier and some else.

Maybe I sell bike and buy Yamaha. BMW spare politics is really piss me off...

Valves are always available.
Get your friend to measure the valves (head diameter, stem diameter, length, collet groove type and dimensions.)

I can then ask a friend who makes valves for the nearest alternatives

I'm sure BMW will buy them in from a valve specialist, so as you say, it's just a matter of finding the right ones.

Sold as cheap....

I sold Xc to guy, who sels me bike 11 years ago. So, he could repair bike like he wants. I thing options to fix bike and continue adventers but.....

I make testdrive Yamaha tenere 700 with stud-tires in winter roads and no more sales pitch needed.

I have owned BMW motos since 2006. Airhead-GS, K100 and Xchallenge. Now I have Classic RR-bike (PC23 Honda) and Tenere. Lets see how life continues without BMW.
Thanks for years!
