I have a 1995 R1100 which I have recently put back on the road. I has 85K miles on the clock and I have owned it from new. Unfortunately it has started to have gear selection problems. Selection of first is some times difficult as can be first to second. Some times it will drop out of second into neutral. I presume it is the selector mechanism that is worn. Can anyone recommend a workshop who could fix this for me. I will take the gearbox out and ship it. A workshop in Scotland would be preferable but not essential.
 
Might be a good idea first, assuming you haven’t already done it, is to take apart the external parts of the gear selection linkage and give them a good clean and lubrication.

A slick and smooth external linkage can sometimes resolve what appears to be internal gearbox gear selection problems.

But the only gearbox specialist I know of is Mikeyboy of this parish who runs Overland and Classic motorcycles near Melton Mowbury.

Try removing the gear lever and make sure that it is free moving

There are 2 x top hat grey bushings between the steel centre bush and the alloy of the gear lever

Corrosion gets between the alloy and plastic and the swelling makes the assembly tight on the centre bush
if it does not move freely gear selection can be totally hit or miss
 
Beware, the little clips that hold the exterior linkages together are not called 'pingfuckits' for nothing :blast
 
Definitely worth stripping the linkages and clean and lube them. I had this on an 1150 and a 1200, the linkages get sticky and prevent the gear lever returning to the "reset" position so preventing selection of the next gear and it has all the symptoms of an internal gearbox fault.
