Midday Express - Istanbul on the hoof

So I’ve done this already but will write it up as if live, trying to put on a day each day.

I’ve posted lots of trips before on here prior to taking a sabbatical………….

Managed to get 4 weeks off and wanted to do something a bit different, I made it as far as Croatia during COVID, legally, so wanted to push on a bit whilst taking things in on the way.

The on the hoof aspect reflects that I had nothing planned at all, apart from getting new tyres fitted in London on day one, I like the freedom of waking up and not knowing where I’m going that day exactly. Not for everyone but it works for me…….

I ended up taking my RT as I’d just spent 1200 quid replacing the alternator, ouch, so wanted to justify that as it were.

Rough plan, anti clockwise teardrop with Istanbul at the end, that’s plan enough to go with I think……

Anyway, good trip this, sit back and enjoy I hope…………..

Day 1

Home to Wallingford in Oxfordshire. 130 miles.

Started with amazing weather. Long may that continue.

The bike,after it’s extended fettling by the guru Steve at Rainbow

, is running great.

Had walk round Wallingford. A nice place to visit if you hanvt been.

Duty tomorrow then towards London and trip proper as it were ………

Me too, that was an interesting tour.

Recovered bike from Italy by using 4 batteries a day…..

Day 2

Benson Oxfordshire for a day at work and onto London. 100 miles.

My last days work happened to be midway to dover so I packed for trip and used bike to commute it. A nice day on duty with Thames valley.

Top tip for the day is don’t go skateboarding

Tomorrow is off for tyres then to dover for ferry. Onwards to Germany hopefully.

(Without hitting any migrant boats would be great

Weather holding….. we like that a lot …….

Bike hidden at back of hotel in London.

Is it me or is England the only place people worry about their bike overnight ??

Day 3

Laaaaandaaan to Merzig Germany.

380 miles

Bike still in its parking place at back of hotel so good start.

Into London for tyres. Pilot Road 5 fitted, blast to dover to get the boat.

Made it with about 15 mins to spare, easy crossing, dodging dinghy’s all the way.

Monstered it through France Belgium Luxembourg and Germany.

I reckoned 2100. Pulled up at 2059 with 4 miles range left. Top bit of mental dead reckoning.

Mainly dull dual carriageway.

Last 40 miles followed the Mosel. Stunning in the shade of the hills.

Highest temp 29, steady 26 all day, sweating like a one legged man at an arse kicking contest all day.

Bed now as I’m pooped.
