Anyone know of any Scottish GS girls ? :nenau

G C

don't know anybody up there with a GS but I do know a girl with an 850R who I know is always willing to raise money for breast cancer charities. do you want me to ask her. She's just outside Inverness so fairly easy for her.

Jez, thanks for the that. I'm not in a position to turn down / rule out any offer of assistance. The more folk involved the better as far as I'm concerned. So yes, please ask her if she would like to be involved.
Cheers

Hi Guys,

I recently came to the aid of a Tosser on the east side (Fife) and ask 'em to read the pages and help out, so I am trying to do a bit as well :thumb I am told there are Tosser's about but, maybe they are still .. hibernating :D

The Route

The route, sticking with the brief of “the perimeter”

If anyone thinks there is a better option, let me know, its not my “playground” that far north.
Total mileage is 460. I shall do the proposed route sometime in the next month and take some notes.
For a handover point in Fort William, I can think of a pub that has a decent car park, toilet facilities, and could be persuaded to provide free coffee and food to all participants. ;)
Any feedback appreciated..

Cheers

We need more participants ?? :nenau
I've travelled most of this route already and its fantastic. Good roads with stunning scenery.

hey GC can ya tell me exactly where you are gonna end so I know where I am gonna start?????? :D
Laur

If you go along the north coast from Durness to John O Groats you will miss out the most northerly point on the UK mainland. On the Thurso to John O Groats road, Dunnet Head is single track 5 mile detour off the main road with a nice lighthouse & viewpoint at the top of 300ft cliffs. For me it far more picturesque than JOG which lies at sea level and is a tourist trap. I think it would a piy to go all the way north without actually reaching the most northerly point as well.

part of the problem is will this be in the dark???
this is not a road to try & hurry in less than perfect conditions.
Can the start be arranged to minimise risk on this leg?

Hi Cookson, details on this thread post 10, Details are
Date: Friday 8th
Start pointThe Lochy, Caol, Fort William.
Start time: 00:30
Mileage: 445 miles/10 hours.… + 2 hrs for night time riding and comfort breaks
Handover point: A96 Inverness Business & Retail Park
ETA: 12:30 hrs

Wicker, I agree 100% :thumb but safety shall be my first priority. As Dirty Dan has pointed out this leg looks to start at midnight, I have added two hours to the trip time because of this.
I have still to cover the whole route on the bike, by the time I get back to the Fort its over 500 miles. The weather over the past few weeks hasn’t allowed this.
I need to check out the details of our leg, where can we get fuel through the night, where can we eat, comfort breaks etc etc.
None of these issues are major problems, we just need to take our time, plan it properly and by September be ready to enjoy it. :bounce1
It may well be the case that we have daylight by the time we are at the most Northerly point, what time is sunrise in September.
Thanks for the input Keep it coming. :clap

I am thinking of coming upto Fort William & Isle of Sky area before September & would maybe like to ride the route before hand, perhaps we could meet up & do a recce of fuel stop & eating/resting places.

What do you think. ?

Thinking around end of May, let me know if that suit's & I'll nail down a long weekend off work.

;)

As you may guess from my handle I was born in Wick and, although I now live in central Scotland near Falkirk, I have travelled northern roads quite a few times including your proposed route. If you are travelling as late as midnight , fuel may well be a problem as this part of the world is not big on 24 hour petrol stations (basically there are pretty much non existant north of Inverness). If you are travelling on a weekend or public holiday things may be worse still.
Going nth up past Ullapool you will find some big distances and real one horse villages mostly without petrol stations. Ullapool, Thurso and Wick all have petrol.
Durness or Bettyhill may have petrol but certainly worth checking beforehand & what opening hours. May be worth checking the distances versus the shortest tank range of your group.

The road nth of Ullapool is a mixture of A class (they would be called B class roads anywhere else outside the Highlands) and single track. Quite a lot of single track and some of it not in the best condition with a few nasty bends thrown in for good measure. Majority of the roads up there are unfenced moorland so watch out for wandering sheep or deer during daytime but particularly after dark as the low traffic volumes mean the animals are not too road conscious. It will probably be getting dark around 2000 with daylight by 0700. Personally, I would not ride this road though the night as you are along way from help if anything were to happen.

Wicker,

Any idea what the mobile phone signals are like up there, what is a good / best network to get coverage ??

:)
