Regional Co-ordinators and team members..……..Sunday 12 March 2006

Thanks to those of you who’ve posted your proposed regional route plans as requested.

If we stick to the posted routes so far, the challenge is likely to take over 100 hours to complete. Even taking into account the extra day we’ve given ourselves this still takes the finish well into late Saturday.

So with this in mind, please take a look at the route on the map HERE. If followed it should enable us to complete the relay challenge in little over 70 hours as per the original idea. It will also give us a bit of leeway for the inevitable delays. If you have a GPS, the link below will give you the route in a bit more detail.

The route isn’t using twisty biking roads or the most scenic but it is using the quickest, easiest roads, and probably the safer roads for those riding of you through the night.

Would each Regional Co-ordinator and their team members look at the route and let me know your thoughts before Sunday.

After Sunday the 12th of March, we need to fix a definitive route as the official ‘Pink Way Around Britain’ challenge route. We’ve a programme deadline that has to be met, the marketing and PR related material has to be printed soon and we’d therefore really appreciate you’re constructive comments back no later than the date above.

Thanks so much for your help and co-operation; it’s very much appreciated.

If you do have any questions or queries relating to the above or indeed the link attachment please post them here and I’ll do my best to help

Karen :)

Any of the new starting times will mean Georgia having to take another days holiday.. holiday she doesn't have.
It may be the case nearer the time that Georgia could arrange shift swop but there can be no guarantee.
As you need to finalise route/arrangements/participants asap we regret that at this point in time we can longer offer our support for this event.. a decision not taken lightly & purely due to circumstances,

Apologies from us both.

Region 2

Hi Karen,

Although I cannot open the linked gdb.file at work (no MapSource software installed here and home PC has broken down...), I assume the route is the same I test rode last Sunday PinkWayRegion2?

If this is the case I can confirm that it will probably take me 5 hrs to complete the leg including one fuel/loo/sandwich stop. Considering the tight time-frame I will be happy to ride it even though it is mostly dual carriage and motorway (then without wondering (about the differences between the original proposal in our thread and the one posted here), stopping, swearing and u-turning anymore... ;) ).

Thank you and the team for all your time and efforts! :clap

I'm so sorry to hear this news but I do understand your reasons why.

May I take this opportunity to thank you both for all time and effort that you have put in. I do hope that you can both make the East Midlands Regional event .... It would be great to meet you both and share a drink or two.

Keep watching the threads though and if you can make it please contact me if you do happen change your minds

Regards

with respect to your proposed version of the route i find that a large size of our welsh route will be on the m4???

cmon , its supposed to be a coastal route surely?

and from 100 hrs to 70 is aint that much?

i can accept some of the alterations but to be fair , the motorway is for reps !!!

just a thought..

70 hours as opposed to 100 hrs on the road is in my opinion a massive saving Slimbo, plus it offers your regional team not only the chance to ride during daylight hours but also an increased opportunity to join most, if not all riders at the East Midlands Event to celebrate our success should you and rest of the riders wish to do so.

The event and the challenge run back to back with one another and we really do want to give all riders the opportunity to attend the event and thoroughly enjoy the whole weekend in full.

So.......

Anyone got one of these Garmin files with the pretty bits still in it?... I'd love to come over and ride around the UK for a week or so, and I'll like to do it off the motorway bits as much as possible....

It sounds like lots of local people have suggested what they think are the best riding bits of the route through thier area (I understand why this route has been "sped" up a bit though).. but I'd sure love to see the file that has all those great suggestions if it exists..

Huh??? :bounce1 .... worth a donation (if someone sends me some details), to me for it... :beerjug:

Al...

Araspitfire, I am not sure it exists as a single file. I think the various coordinators have just done their own thing at this stage.

There is an original file someone created simply to estimate the full distance while following the coast, but I don't think it was ever considered a viable route. The file is 1.6Mb though. You can find a link here: http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53399&page=6&pp=16&highlight=round+britain+relay. Look for the 3rd post from Llama about halfway down - there is a link to the file.

I agree with slimbo the motorway is for reps. with the time saved on the motorway on the early pary of the South/West Wales section i think we should keep the route flexible just after swansea.i work all over West Wales weekly and all the roads are in exellent biking condition. I will bring an up date of the road conditions to the start any way for people to make their own disissions :thumb

Thanks for that, I'll have a close look at it when I feel the urge to come over and visit.

Al...

I'm with slimbo, the original concept (of which I was part of) was to ride the coast roads not motorway's.

However, from what I can tell, region 9 (my section) Fort William to Inverness remains unchanged as their is really only 1 route but if it was to change, I don't think I would be taking part.

The challenge was to ride around the coast of Britain not cut big chunks off & ride the motorway's of Britain !!!!!

:(

I also agree with Slimbo, however by staying on the M4 until Swansea we aren't really missing that much coast and we will also avoid mostn of the built up areas. I also agree it would be a shame for anybody to miss the East Midlands do. It's alright for the people who start and us what do the middle runs, the people on the later legs will be the ones that miss out.

Going to be interesting on Thursday ennit?

Ooops, Just looked again at the map, the Fort William to Inverness route has changed quite a bit.

Not too happy about that, although not on motorway's but moved away from the coast route I originally volunteered for.

If the reason for change is to avoid the clash with the GS Event, why not alter the weekend for the challenge instead of altering the route.

The venue for the event is already booked, including the live band.. and I've paid the deposit!
