A Guide To God's Country.

In keeping with our celtic bretheren who have a similar spot in their section, this is a guide to assist us and our visitors to find places of interest, good food venues, great roads and attractions. In fact, feel free to add anything that you think might be of help to GSers in or visiting Scotland.

Can you please link anything that you want to add to the list.

This is a great GSing road, single carriageway and a bit of grass down the middle :clap

The best way to get onto Skye, use the little ferry and a cracking single track road :)

Hidden places the touroids miss ...?

There are some amazing places up here that visitors often miss ...

Fortingall for example. It has what is possibly Europe's oldest tree http://www.forestry.g ov.uk/forestry/INFD-6UFC5F and the ride to get there from any direction is fantastic. To see something that may be 5 000 years old is quite something. Even the wife's mum aint that old! Fortingall is also reputed to be the birthplace of Pontius Pilate. Well he had to be born somewhere!

Or the Whaligoe Steps. Not 39 but 365

Near Wick. What about climbing them with a creel of fish on your back?

re Discovering Scotland

Anyone travelling north to Tyndrum HAS to stop off at the trailer caff north of Lochearnhead...it's on the A85 just before Lix Toll. Right hand side as going north.
Fantastic butties all prepared fresh as you wait (try the griddled potato cheese and onion :D ) and big proper mugs of tea and all dead cheap! :thumb
They were threatened with being closed down by the Forestry Commision a couple of years back but a huge petition was drawn up and signed by thousands and so they're still there!
Warms you up for the next bit north (and stop at the Green Welly for nice clean loos and good hand driers!)

If you are looking for somewhere nice to stay after a blast down a crackin road (A830), you could do a lot worse than here... http://www.westhighlandhotel.co.uk/

Not the cheapest but excellent value nonetheless.

The owner Alastair is very pro-biker and lets you use the 'Shed' to park your bikes in....

Sadly, he lost his Son Dec06...

He died whilst in India on a Motorcycling Holiday....enjoying what we can all relate to on here..:(

Me PJ1200 and a mate are bimbling up to your glorious land in May for about eight days. We plan to go up the west coast with inland forrays getto the top an back down the other side. Any info well recieved. Should I have a bandana over me moosh? is this hi-jacin'.
Wilkinsons foot was definately in touch, thought you were hard done by........:augie :augie :augie

It isn't quite keeping to the coast but the road from Tongue on the very North coast down through Altnaharra is unbelievable...what a fantastic road. You feel like you are on top of the world...just watch out for locals on the road about 4-5pm-ish...going home..they know all the corners very well!
Could hardly keep my eyes on the road last year...too much sky and scenery to take in! :thumb2

Whisky

I'll start this now and add to it as and when I have the time.

The obvious 'mecca' is The Scotch Malt Whisky Society - http://www.smws.co.uk/venues/ :thumb (And there's even a venue in that there London ;) )

The Scotch Whisky Association's new website has some good info too (although not all distilleries are members). Their map is here - http://www.scotch-whisky.org.uk/swa/71.html

A bit touristy, but nice roads around the Speyside whisky trail - www.maltwhiskytrail.com
Whole bunch of them here under the Diageo umbrella - www.discovering-distilleries.com
Need an excuse to sample the (usually) smoky and medicinal flavours of Islay? - www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/islay/distilleries/

I would highly recommend the

Moulin Hotel

on the outskirts of Pitlochry for meals and good ale. Nice Olde Worlde appeal in the bar and roaring log fires...:thumb2

Ditto that above.
I happen to be off there on Thursday where I will be working for a few days fitting a kitchen.
Also, only 11 miles up the glen, is the world famous Glen Lyon Tea Room.
