Do your splines look like this?
This is what mine look like at 3000 miles

My previous bike had loads of grey sticky grease at 6000 miles !
:D

I changed my final drive oil, and while I don't recall seeing any rust, the splines were completely dry. This didn't seem right to me, so I stuffed a load of moly grease on them when slipping it back on.

Likewise, I purchased a tube of moly grease from the dealer and applied it liberally !

Oh... and the speedo sensor bolt was made of cheese and the torx key rounded the head nicely. Why do simple jobs never work that way!
:D

I poked my head into the workshop as my GS was being Serviced (600 mile) and the Technician was just in the process of applying the silvery/grey grease to the splines before reassembling the rear drive after the oil change.
He said they do it every service. (Cooper Sunderland).

Strange coicidence, but I was opening up the final drive on my 3000 mile GS last night too! I left it hanging overnight for oil to drip out, just need to find some moly 60 and then I can put it all back together.

Anyway, my splines looked nothing like yours - mine were a bit lacking in grease, but were in what looked really good unmarked condition. Although mine is only 3k miles, it is still 2.5 years old.

I believe it was very well looked after for its first two years - it came to me last august spotless with less than 1k miles and looked like it had never seen a raindrop, so that might be part of reason. However, since then it has lived outside and been riden through a britsh winter and that seems not to have had an effect.

PS did you buy your x0 oil on line, or find a shop. I am about to use a generic fully synth 75w/90 from a local specialist oil blender unless I can easily get the brand name!

That looks athough it's had water in it judging by the colour of the splines is
the rubber boot a good fit, no holes?. You can buy the grease in a large tube at your local friendly BMW dealers.

Not uncommon especially if you go 'fording'! - saw a thread on ADVrider with an even worse example. Definately worth checking the gaiters both ends of the drive shaft for tears/holes and make sure the mating surfaces are well greased.....

I've never been fording, and probably never will, perhaps the occasional puddle, and the gaitors look in good condition:nenau

You may not do fording but I assume you've ridden through rain? this will work it's way in as they could not get in that state in five minutes, check it after each wet ride and see, only take a minute.

So how do you check it. Is it a matter of simply pulling the gaitor back, or do you need to drop the drive shaft somehow?

Bumpy, that was my thought as well :nenau

The gaitor is a very tight squashed fit and I cannot see how you can check or drain the coupling area without dropping the final drive... and I sure as hell ain't going to do that every time that it rains :D
