This came to me as a bit of a surprise but when you sit down and think about it, it makes perfect sense. :thumb2 Some in the military will probably have heard of this before because it’s apparently one of the “essentials” the specialists carry with them. :nenau
It needs to be a twin one made from magnesium with a steel blade like this one.

If you’re stuck somewhere ( unlikely but can happen ) you can scrape some of the highly flammable magnesium off the side which will readily ignite from a spark. You put that right next to some fresh sharpening from a few twigs which act as kindling. You can then use the sharpened twigs / sticks as tent pegs or fire material.
I’ve since found that you can buy magnesium filings with a ferro rod on Amazon. :D I can’t get the link to work. :nenau
This is nothing new but I’d never heard of it before.

All the switched on cookies had a pencil sharpener, needed one for the chinagraph pencils we used to mark maps with in a plastic map case at the O groups. Never had a Ninja one like yours though.

I love your enthusiasm for everything camping related. (y)
I thought I was a sucker for stumbling across things that create needs in me that I didn't know I had but you make me look like a lightweight. :D

Long may it continue and thank you for sharing this sort of stuff with us. :thumb2

We had the chinagraph pencils with the string incorporated into the outer casing. Very easy to get a point again. Especially when it’s raining and you’re the entry control operator on the BA Board.

I’d not call it enthusiasm, more like addiction! :blast :D
In my youth I was always a bit of a loner. Entirely my choice I may add. :thumb2 I never had “good” kit but good enough to get me out. I’m now in the fortunate position to be able to collect and use the best kit on the market. I have a HUGE amount of camping gear now. :blast I have everything needed for a lightweight trip on a push bike, bigger and heavier stuff for on a motorbike and shit loads of top quality stuff for a car trip. Every time I think I have all I need something else pops up! :D Hey ho. Each to their own. :thumb2

We didn’t have money for top class gear growing up either. I now buy good quality outdoor gear. I still have my Point 5 Orion sleeping bag that I got for my 16 th birthday in 1976. It’s known as two feather now.
