Our master HD on the desktop started making an "interesting repetitive thrashing noise last night. PC had frozen and reboots in any mode just put it in a reboot cycle.

Managed to format the drive (although it made the thrashing noise at one point of the format cycle). Got the PC working so I could back up the most recent data on it, but its defintely acting up. Now I'm off to find a new HDD to replace the knackered one.

I'l pick up an external drive to boot. Hopefully NAS, then I know I can back up everything easy peasy.

MORAL: Do your backups.

It would not have affected my Digi Piccies as they were on a second disk, but if it had I would have been crying for the next year.

A humbled PB:(

Sata PCI boot

OK,

I can get a new 500Gb SataII disk from the local compustore, but I have an IDE motherboard.

If I get a Sata (II) PCI controller, can I boot through the card on the Sata disk, or am I going to have to boot off my second IDE disk (currently a slave).

I rather fancy the Sata disk, as my next PC (not just yet) will have a Sata motherboard.

Anyone know before I go the shops tomorrow.

Cheers PB
