il Bastardo - Ducati Monster big traillie

The Feb 2016 edition of "Motorcycle Sport & Leisure" arrived today.

There is an interesting seven-page article on this project entitled "Build your Perfect Bike".

Its a very good testimonial for Chris Tunbridge - our pal "Tunneruk" :thumb :thumb.

Good one fellas ;).

Bob.

Thanks for that Bob -

Righto, it's off to WHSmiths then!

That kind of advertising won't do any harm at all Chris. :)

Has anybody put the Bastardo on the scales yet?

Not yet, although I was just wondering the same thing over the weekend. She's very light to wheel around.... but compared to an 1150 GS a lot of bikes are!

The standard Monster 620ie weighs 177kg dry. The Elefant front end will weigh very close to that of the Monster (slightly longer forks but slimmer and with 1 disc not 2)- the steel and ally fabrications around the headstock and swing arm pivot will add about 5Kg... maybe??? The exhaust revisions will pretty much balance out.

So I am keen to weigh it and really know, and will do so when the opportunity arises, but I'd estimate that it'd be close to 182-185Kg dry.

Oh hang on, it's gained about 10kg of paint.... :D

No, I reckon by the time he flattened it back and polished it there'll only be 2½Kgs.

You'll be surprised to hear that I only had to nib out a couple of bits here and there, the majority of the job is gun finish ;)

That's about as fine a bespoke motorcycle as I have ever seen. Congratulations to all involved. :clap:clap

Not really Chris, it's clear from the various photo records posted that you have great skill. I wish I had even a smallish fraction of your skill. My efforts with rattle cans always end up looking like course sand paper or have runs and sags in them. :D

That's the down side to rattle cans mate. They have paint, metallic, some have an element of activator and some have a glossing agent all squeezed into a small tin to be self propelled out of a tiny nozzle. To get a good finish under those circumstances takes a fair bit of doing!

Thanks!

Yes, and roughly a year later, last week Bastardo and I enjoyed a great day out with another tosser, Kiwi Mike, thundering down the TT-like country lanes and then carefully navigating the muddy tracks of Hampshire. When you have to do a 6-point-turn on a muddy track that's only 2 metres between the thorn bushes on either side, you really appreciate her light weight.

When the going got particularly slippery, I could only think "thank God Tunneruk (who did the lovely paint job) can't see us now.."!! :D:D

Ha!

I'm happy that the thread got a bump as it was a very enjoyable read.. without waiting for the next set of photos. Terrific job, great result :thumb

Thanks Roberto.

I personally believe that too many projects, once they are completed, are either stored away in a cosseted dust free environment for posterity or broken back into bits because they have ultimately disappointed.

From the start this was a bike that was intended to be improved, and then ridden and that's exactly what has happened.

Just last week, on the way down to meet Mike, the lady in the Shell garage said that her entire family rode Ducatis but she didn't know what mine was and would I mind if she took a picture...

Great, I am glad it still turns heads, even if they are a bit greyer and a bit older than I'd maybe choose..:D:D:D

Agree with you there Paul. Projects are very personal things, if you are happy with the end result then bugger everyone else. However, public approval is the icing on the cake.
Well done m8y for delivering your dream.

(And if it helps, I think it's fab too)

Hey up paul and hope all's good :beerjug:

Dunno if you get Sideburn but the latest edition just landed on the door mat and there's a little article in there I reckon you'll find interesting :beerjug:

Andres

I'm liking the article; what does it say on the next pages, please?

Since I sold my KTM 525 last year I've fancied building a big trailie that takes luggage and would be ideal to take to Iceland (I don't have anything I want to take there at the moment).

TIA,

Iain

Thanks Andres - absolutely, I find it fascinating to see how someone else has approached the same aim.

That's a great looking bike - I really like the exhaust solution. And those 900 motors with their dry clutches just sound glorious.

Like Khulu, I'd be really interested to read the rest of the article. Thanks again! :thumb :beerjug:
